Tough choice on the poll this year, which automatically means that it was a great year for the Indian Automotive Industry . My personal COTY shortlist included the Dzire - FINALLY Maruti builds a 5-star safety budget car, that also happens to be an all-rounder. When Maruti builds a 5-star compact sedan, the implications are massive. Why? Simply because it pushes everyone else around it to also start building safer cars. You can bet that Hyundai is already working on it.

The Tata Punch EV too, makes it to my shortlist. It is a fabulous EV and IMHO, the perfect city car for anyone & everyone. Compact size, interiors that feel great & kinda premium, loaded with features, big on style, technology and a perfectly tuned EV powertrain. Although I love the Currv EV too, the Punch EV is way more relevant to the market due to its pricing.

The MG Windsor is a masterpiece of practicality, great pricing, space & quality. It’s the kind of model that is required to take EVs mainstream.

Still, after thinking about our COTY poll for 4 days, my vote finally goes to the incredible Thar Roxx. For a car that combines WORK + PLEASURE + STYLE like no other, the Thar Roxx is my choice for the Team-BHP Car of 2024 . It’s the kind of car that proves you don’t need to spend big money to have fun. Engage 4x4 and you’ll be laughing in delight…although I might add, its brute character makes it fun on the road too. It’s the kind of car that appeals to a rich family from South Bombay / South Delhi, a well-to-do farmer from the hinterlands, newly married couples from the Bangalore IT world & an everyday college girl.

Click here to read my Thar Roxx review!

I love cars with character and the Thar Roxx finally combines practicality with style (3-door Thar is too impractical). And it’s just not the additional 2 doors. Mahindra smartly avoided stretching the 3-door Thar to make the 5-door Thar. Instead, they used a completely different platform! As a result, the Thar Roxx’s drive is more comparable to a Scorpio-N than the 3-door Thar. The Thar Roxx is powerful, refined, has nice interiors, liveable ride quality (but still bumpy, unsettled & busy), safety equipment & more. Get one, modify the heck out of it, customize it uniquely to your tastes and have a blast in life.

I was reading the posts on the Thar Roxx launch thread and have never seen any new car launch with so many BHPians saying "I want to buy it, I want to book it, I don't need it but I still want one". This SUV has an air of desirability around it. The market wholeheartedly agrees with these sentiments. The Thar Roxx garnered 176,000 bookings in 60 minutes! Although, once potential owners test-drive it on the road, there will be many cancellations too (unsettled ride quality, body-on-frame disadvantages, can’t match the finesse of same-price crossovers).

Mahindra’s ability to churn out one blockbuster after another is commendable = XEV 9e, Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, Scorpio-N, XUV700, 3-door Thar…we are witnessing an era of Mahindra going from "good" to "greatness". From being a maker of crude’ish UVs to being the undisputed KING of 10-30 lakh SUVs & Crossovers.

Extremely proud of Mahindra, Tata, Maruti & MG for bringing such great products to the market. These 4 cars raise the bar for everyone else.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar Roxx as it is the one car that made me want to up/downgrade from my Jeep Compass, and lose my mind for a couple of weeks before sanity prevailed.

Brilliant job by Mahindra in appealing to the heart, making every other entry on the poll seem like a bland choice IMHO.

Close second to Maruti DZire for ticking all the boxes this time around - quite a turnaround from Maruti Suzuki on this one, especially with the looks, features and the 5-star safety rating. Now if only they had a better automatic gearbox than the AMT!

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar ROXX.

While most of the world was going towards EVs and Hybrids, it took a company like Mahindra to understand that there are customers who want a stylish vehicle that has all the features, pretty much drive itself and still go anywhere with 4x4.

And then we Indians can purchase a ROXX at an affordable cost.

This is no coincidence because we saw what they did with their BE vehicles, RWD, tech loaded fun vehicles that look futuristic. This is why I think the days of MG, BYD etc are numbered, I do not think they have done the homework at all.

Voted for Thar Roxx. No brainer this time. Actually, a no-brainer for 5 years in a row, of which 4 have been Mahindra cars.

Other blockbuster launches of this year have been MG Windsor and BYD Seal respectively, which, in my opinion, deserve to share the second position.

I am surprised by the omission of Mahindra XUV 3XO though, it deserved a third position just behind MG Windsor and BYD Seal.

Voted for Thar Roxx. Like someone mentioned above it was masterstroke by Mahindra to win over the hearts of the buyers rather than appeal to their brains. Thar Roxx does just that. No wonder it leads the polls.

I am pretty sure we already have the next year's COTY already decided, or it could be a tough one to choose between just two cars (of the same brand).

Voted for the new Dzire. With radical styling to set apart the exterior and a stunner of a 5 star BNCAP rating, this car offers some of the most sought after traits of reliability, desirability and safety to the average Indian consumer at an affordable price. The consequences of this product are very far reaching and this will truly change the state of the Indian car market for years to come. Purely in terms of value offered, impact created the new Dzire is THE definitive car of the year for me.

Can't vote right now, because I am a newbie but Thar Roxx undoubtedly. The most value for money "real" SUV out there. Given that it has some next level features now like ADAS and ventilated seats, it's a complete package for city drivers too.
Roxx will for sure rock as car of the year.

Voted for Windsor.

The vote is for the car and for new BaaS concept that this car introduced. It has managed to overthrow all existing ev bestsellers and also forced other manufacturers to think about offering battery on 'lease'. Moves like these can help convert ev non-believers like me.

Roxx was a very commendable effort by Mahindra. But they extended the magic they had created with the Thar already.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

The MG Windsor is an easy choice for me. It is the first affordable EV built from scratch and marks a milestone in the Indian car industry. It's a very smartly designed car, and I find it well-priced too. The only issue is the lack of a higher-capacity battery variant.

Recently, someone in my apartment complex bought a new base-model Windsor, which was parked next to a brand-new Thar 4D that someone else had just purchased. Everyone I know—including my non-automotive friends, my girlfriend, and even random elderly people on their evening strolls—was smitten by the MG and how clean and cute it looks. It genuinely appears years ahead of anything else on the road, at least until the Mahindra EV twins become available.

Voted for Mahindra Thar Roxx

I was a bit confused between the Mahindra Thar Roxx and the Maruti Dzire. Both are amazing products that launched this year. They are feature rich and have great looks. Both cars score above their competition and are superb to drive.

With the Maruti Dzire being just launched, reviews and more details about it are still coming out, while it's been some time since the Mahindra Thar Roxx was launched. More material and user experiences are available for the Mahindra Thar Roxx, hence, I voted for it.

Voted for the THAR Roxx, Jack of all trades and Master of some.

It checks all the boxes! Choice of Petrol/Diesel, RWD for the daily crowd, Proper 4x4 for the weekenders, big sunroof for the stargazers!
You just can't go wrong with the Thar this time.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

I made a left field choice, namely BYD Seal, a first, truly world class EV in India. Its got space, pace and grace and its priced really well for what is on offer.

Not a big fan of the Thar Roxx - the branding too chintzy for my liking and if I wanted a body on frame offroader with decent on roads manners, I'll buy the Scorpio. Thar Roxx will always be a poor man's Wrangler

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Maruti Dzire (must admit that I was tempted to vote for Mahindra Thar Roxx).

Certainly one of those years wherein there is no obvious answer.
Plenty of contenders for different reason come to my mind - Tata Punch EV for a relatively sorted city car (albeit a little expensive), Mahindra Thar Roxx for the wonderful package and further growing on the market that Mahindra Thar had created, BYD Seal for a seriously wonderful car at a price not expected by any (slightly let down by limited showrooms and Chinese company tag).

My vote, however goes to Maruti Dzire. While it has been many years since I have owned a Maruti, and will perhaps not be owing one in near future to meet the demands of the enthusiastic me, this car has possibly revived the compact sedan segment that was slowly fading away (partly owing to the SUV/Crossover-craze). Such has been the impact that even Honda Amaze has had to provide a significant refresh (at least design wise and few added features at a similar price to the outgoing generation).

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

It's between the Dzire and Roxx for me and my vote goes for the Dzire.

Maruti finally differentiated it from the Swift, made a safe car, volunteered a GNCAP test (an organisation they refused to even acknowledge in the past) and loaded it up with features.

The Dzire is also relevant for a larger section of the Indian car buying public which is another reason it gets my vote.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

My Vote goes to the Tata Curvv twins. This was a bold move by Tata to introduce a new segment altogether and provide ICE as well as EV options. Pitting against the existing heavy weights and still pulling great sales numbers is no little feat. The design simply bowls over anyone visiting the tata showroom. Its a practical car packed with performance and features.

I wonder why the Maruti Swift is in even the list.

Maruti came late to the party of safe cars and Dzire doesn't get any thing new other than the rating and some nose job.

Thar Roxx for me looks obnoxious. Personal opinion.
