November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting.

- Mahindra have slipped to no. 4 position in spite of having started the Thar Roxx deliveries. This is because of marginally reduced sales of the Bolero, XUV3XO, XUV700 and Scorpio. Roxx is the only Mahindra with a positive MoM growth; XUV400 had flat growth.

- Happy to see the Windsor sustain its initial momentum. To have a portfolio with over 70% sales coming from EVs is unseen before (and honestly it's giving me a "petrolhead crisis" ). Kudos to MG.

- I would say the Dzire's sales number is a case of 'silence before the storm'. Won't be surprised if this makes it to the top 5 list in the coming months.

- The City, as usual, is dying a slow and painful death. It is slowly settling into the Ciaz's space. According to reports, the next-gen City will only arrive by 2028; there is no way the current iteration can be left on the ventilator for long. Honda need to bring the new City ASAP, but knowing that its Honda that we're talking about, I don't have much hope.

- The Venue is a silent performer in its segment. Although it isn't the top choice of many auto journos, I think it has nicely positioned itself as the no-nonsense option in this sea of feature-loaded sub-4m crossovers. As for the i20, sales are really dwindling. The Exter has dipped this month too.

- Very sad to see the Basalt underperform. Citroen did try to mend its ways with the Basalt this time, but the first impression is the best impression it seems. I really hope people take notice of this car - it is even cheaper than many sub-4m crossovers.

- Tata have finally regained their mojo - the Nexon and Punch are back at the top after a brief hiatus. The Nexon outsold the Brezza this month. If you think about it, the Nexon has the most number of powertrains in the country! Petrol 5MT, 6MT, 6AMT, 7DCT; Diesel, 6MT, 6AMT; CNG 6MT; EV 30 kWh, 45 kWh! Crazy number of options.

i20 sales have fallen flat and I am quite surprised. Even Altroz sales are low but no real surprises here.

I appreciate Maruti's audacity to still sell the Ciaz.

Feel sad for the Honda City. Hope the king rises again.

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata crawled back into the 3rd position. Seeing good competion between Tata and Mahindra while Hyundai riding on the mighty Creta's unprecedented success and keeping the second spot - for now.

Really sad to see Seltos's sales numbers. Just about 1/3 of what the Creta is doing. The Seltos deserves better business strategies from Kia. No IVT on the top trim is what hurting it the most. Just in our circle, two families recently chose Creta SXO IVT only because they wanted all the bells and whistles, without DCT reliablilty concerns or diesel DPF headaches. Kia's management must stop smoking whatever they are and start offering right options to consumers.

Feel for Citroen, Nissan, Renault, Jeep dealers with such miniscule figures. Not sure how they are surviving.

Nexon Punch and Curvv are doing great.

What happened to Basalt? Just 47 against Curvv's 5,101, Indian's love good feature rich car's, while Basalt is surely many notches below Curvv.

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

After remaining on top for a few consecutive months, the Ertiga dropped to number 5, while last time's number 6 got the top spot.

The Maruti Baleno managed to secure the top spot, although there was hardly any change in sales numbers from October. Ertiga reaching the top was a surprise for many, and we can say the same thing for its sibling, the Baleno, now. Regardless, Maruti would be happy that they retained the top spot, which the Punch had stolen from them for a few months this year.

Once a topper, the Maruti Alto continues to remain at number 20 and might move out of the Top 20 list soon. The state of small cars continues to remain bleak, with only four A and B segment cars in the Top 20 list, all of which are from the Maruti family. Maruti continues to dominate the Top 10 count with six models in the list. However, a warning for them as this time they managed to get only one car in the top 4.

Hyundai continues to have only the Creta in the Top 5, with one more, the Venue, in the Top 15 list. The picture continues to remain bleak for the number 2 manufacturer. Imagine what would have happened if the new Creta was not as successful as it is.

The Tata Punch moved up to reach number 3 from last month's number 7. It looks like the Punch is slowly gaining some ground and moving up the ladder to reach the top spot. It will be interesting to see if the Punch can reclaim the top spot, which it held for a long time this year. Besides the Punch, the Tata Nexon gained a few positions to reach number 4 this time around. Unfortunately, those are the only cars from Tata in the Top 20 list. Again, not an ideal situation for a manufacturer aiming for the number 2 position.

While Hyundai and Tata continue to have only two cars each in the Top 20 list, Mahindra also continues to keep four cars in the Top 20. With the Scorpio slipping a few numbers, Mahindra still seems a long way from making a big impact in the Top 20 list and having any of its vehicles challenge the topper.

It is interesting to see MG selling more cars than Honda for the past two months. Hopefully, the new Amaze will help Honda regain some lost ground.

Sales for the Maruti Invicto suddenly rose this month. I wonder why?

Similarly, there is a sudden drop in MG Comet sales. Maybe the initial hype is over?

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I love how you'd find tonnes of comments and reviews trolling the Creta everywhere but it's always the best selling SUV. Regardless, a masterstroke by Hyundai and loving the growth of the Indian car market.

Hoping for continuous improvements and upgrades, an evolution in the way for real.

I don't see separate Thar Roxx numbers. Does the 8708 Thars include 3 door & Roxx's?

Would be nice to see exclusive Roxx numbers from next month on.

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti vs. Toyota Badge Engineering Showdown:
The stats:
Baleno/Glanza
Maruti: 16,293 (4.2x)
Toyota: 3,806

Hyryder/Grand Vitara
Maruti: 10,148 (2x)
Toyota: 4,857

Innova/Invicto
Maruti: 434
Toyota: 7,867 (Crysta + Hycross) (18x)

Ertiga/Rumion:
Maruti: 15,150 (8.4x)
Toyota: 1,803

Fronx/Taisor:
Maruti: 14,482 (4x)
Toyota: 3,620

Toyota is holding its own, pulling in respectable numbers despite its relatively limited showroom presence. Meanwhile, Maruti has dominated across all shared models—except one: the Innova. While Toyota’s tally combines both the Crysta and Hycross, Maruti’s Invicto languishes at a mere 434 units—a shockingly low figure for a brand that consistently knocks it out of the park.

So, what’s going on? Is Toyota’s Hycross stealing the spotlight, or has Maruti stumbled in an unfamiliar segment?

The disparity raises questions about brand perception and whether Toyota’s premium edge is proving unbeatable in this battle of the highest list-priced badge-engineered models.

On the contrary, is Toyota doing similar numbers on Hycross?

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

If the trend continues, Glanza will be the second bestselling hatchback in its category and only next to Baleno.

The facelifted I20 doesn't have the appeal it used to have in terms of looks.

Re: November 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Being an owner of Magnite, it's sad to see it being ignored thus by the Indian customers.
The Nissan Magnite's numbers have fallen back to their original state before the facelift. It doesn't look like the facelift did any good for Nissan even though the updates in the facelift were decently substantial. The October sales showed a decent spike but now it has settled back to its original numbers. It is possible that the news about Nissan's financial troubled may have affected it's current sales. It seems, there's a very small percentage of Indians that see value in the Magnite as a product or just don't trust it enough to put their money into it.

As for Citroen, it's even more sad that such a brilliant mechanical package being ignored. But I can at least see why people aren't buying the Basalt. It is overpriced in the automatic variants. Especially the top variant is close to 17 lakhs on the road. People would rather get anything else than a citroen at that price. The same goes with aircross. Just 200 in a month!

The only value for money product from Citroen is the C3 and even that is not doing any good numbers (especially the automatic). Like others have mentioned, first impressions do count in India!

It will be sad to see such mechanically sorted products go from our market (Ford, Fiat etc).

It would also be interesting to see if the upcoming Kylaq can make any difference to the already saturated sub compact crossover segment. There are already 10 products in the space one of which has been best seller for many months (Brezza, Fronx, Taisor, Venue, Sonet, 3XO, Nexon, Magnite, Kiger, C3).

Also, shouldn't the Exter and Punch be categorised as B2 SUVs rather than C1 segment SUVs? I think the segment segregation was supposed to be based on length.
