re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities

If this merger happens (Still it is speculations as usual) , If they work wisely and efficiently, there can be so many good products from best of both.

Nissan is superior in EV, Autonomous driving & infotainment where as Honda is superior in Hybrid tech.

In US market, Nissan has good sales in ICE with their SUVs (New Kicks/Armada/Murano and Rogue) and Sedan (Sentra) , what they lacked was hybrid and putting hybrid into already popular cars like Rogue and Sentra will bring them easy sales.

For Honda, they could re-badge the Armada/Frontier trucks with proven V6 turbo engines and make Honda version of the Ariya/Next leaf as Honda lacks in BEVs.

For other regions, like India, Magnite's platform is now very well balanced and Honda can make a version for them with Honda specific changes and their upcoming Duster/Terrano twins can be also utilized for Honda to have a proper 4.3m SUVs considering the huge export business which Renault/Nissan is also targetting. I dont think there is nothing Nissan can get from Honda in India considering all their past launches (except Amaze? Too early to tell).

Overall, rather than a complete merger, hopefully if they can work things as an alliance (Renault alliance is officially re-balanced last year to independent companies)

On the same topic, here is another interesting news. Foxconn approaches Nissan to take controlling stake as Honda eyes merger.

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities

Here is more news over the merger.

MONEYCONTROL NEWS

"Honda and Nissan cannot handle the EV transition and considering merging to save costs etc. One more example of why our team has not liked the auto OEMs for long: EV is not an opportunity for these legacy companies, it is a capital guzzling threat and akin to running on a treadmill," said Arora in his X post.

The two firms already forged a strategic partnership in March to cooperate in electric vehicle development, but Nissan's deepening financial and strategic trouble in recent months has added more urgency for closer cooperation with larger rival Honda.

Honda-and Nissan cannot handle the EV transition says helios capital's Samir Arora

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities

Nissan and Honda were already in talks since Mar-24 regarding a partnership,
link
now with Nissan struggling for survival, partnership is moving towards merger where Honda might have a controlling stake. Global benefits of the merger would need to be seen when the details are out, but for India market, Honda can use the 1L 3 cylinder turbo engines of Nissan along with introducing sister products of Magnite and Duster. Similarly Nissan can also model more products on the lines of Amaze and Elevate just like other partnerships and alliances are doing. Not too much to write home though for both brands as they are just looking for survival till they get their EV platform up and running. Given the Japanese ways of working are not nimble, I see Toyota and Suzuki also joining the bandwagon of the supra Japanese brand in the future to take on the thriving Chinese automakers.

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities

Nissan needs this merger. I'm in Canada and in North America, Nissan's reputation is shot. So many people have been burned that they've sworn never to touch this brand with a 50 feet barge pole. The running joke is that only people with bad credit buy Nissan because they can't get approved for any other car.

Getting that merger with Honda should get some faith back in Nissan cars. The Rogue is a great looking car and probably the only decent selling car in their line up.

Instead of rebadging each other's failing products for India, both brands should bring in products from their global line up. There are so many of their good budget cars which they are refusing to bring to India.

Looks like they heard me

I've always wanted Honda to take Mitsubishi instead of Renault Nissan who are absolutely doing nothing with the diamond star brand. A Pilot based Outlander would be nice.

Mitsubishi has a ton of EV tech they've been testing since 2013 right from the Pikes Peak prototypes. They even have proper plug in hybrids.

Some how I failed to understand why can companies plan CKDs for their cars when they can get mid-sized to high end cars as CKDs and sell them in other markets. I understand that to get cars as CKDs, some factories are customized to make CKD kits and especially factories making for RHD markets like India. I don't think they have many factories that can make for countries like UK and Thailand that mimic India like conditions for car type demands.

Market Cap of two separate companies, both of which are underperforming can't be added up, and market cap is also frankly an irrelevant metric.
A combined Nissan Honda would be much more efficient and have a higher market cap than the two put together because of greater confidence. Just look at how Nissan stock has already gone since the news broke.

Yes. Discussions are going on between Honda and Nissan and Taiwans Fox Con ( contract manufacturer) too has expressed interest to take some stakes in it. This alliance will make Honda Nissan to be the third largest car manufacturer of the world. Nissans proven diesel engines will complement Honda. If it comes through it will immensely help both Honda and Nissan in India. With Hondas strong service net work and Nissans entry level models like Magnet.

On account of this news Nissans Share value has increased by 20% in Japan and that of Honda has fallen down by 3%.

This raises an important question. What happens to Renault alliance with Nissan if Nissan ties up with Honda Motors Corporation!

Wiki mentions that Mitsubishi is already part of Renault-Nissan alliance : "Since October 2016, Mitsubishi has been one-third (34%) owned by Nissan, and included in the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance". So will we be looking at a 4 way alliance ? Or is Renault going to be just a dalliance in this Japanese alliance

Post Ghosn, Renault and Nissan have been trying to get independent and not to depend on each other. The alliance stands, but they want more autonomy.
Mitsubishi was taken in by Nissan. And as of now, many Mitsubishis or planned new models are based on Nissan products. Mitsubishi is super dependent on Nissan right now, and when Nissan snubbed them by not sharing the new Patrol for the next gen Pajero, Mitsubishi was helpless.

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities

Taiwan's Foxconn tries backdoor approach with Renault, motivated by desire to fix failure of BEV venture in Thailand.

Foxconn, is in talks with Renault to purchase the latter’s controlling stake in Nissan, reports Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA).

Renault owns 35.7% of Nissan; 17% is owned directly by Renault, while the remaining 18.7% is held via a French trust.

According to CNA, Foxconn had initially approached Nissan directly but was rebuffed, prompting the Japanese automaker to accelerate talks with Honda.

Quote:
the discussions between Nissan and Honda were arranged by Nissan's main bank, Mizuho Bank, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Concerned about Nissan falling under foreign control during its messy separation from Renault, METI rushed to find a Japanese suitor for Nissan, identifying Honda as the ideal candidate to take over what is now the sick man of Japan's once-proud car industry.
Quote:
a Foxconn team led by Chief Strategy Officer Jun Seki, himself a former Chief Operating Officer of Nissan (until December 2019), has traveled to France to discuss purchasing Renault’s controlling stake in Nissan
