re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Honda wants Nissan to acquire the shares Renault has in Nissan for the smooth going of the merger.

https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/6f...bb3ebcbae17e03

This kinda means that Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance might not last longer.

Honda not interested in Renault being part of Nissan.

Quote:
Honda Asks Nissan If It Can Buy Out Renault’s Stake
Renault holds a 35.7% stake in Nissan, which is struggling
Whether Nissan would have the money to do that is questionable
Quote:
Honda is concerned that Renault's stake could be purchased by some unknown third party while the merger plans are underway, possibly upending the process. There's certainly reason for concern—shortly before the merger talks became official, we heard rumors that Foxconn was interested in buying Renault's stake.

Mitsubishi to sit out Honda-Nissan merger, stay independent carmaker.

Mitsubishi reportedly plans to sit out the proposed merger between Honda and Nissan in order to work with the two erstwhile Japanese competitors as an independent, outside carmaker.

Honda and Nissan delay merger update until mid-February.

As Honda and Nissan work toward a merger, Mitsubishi may opt to stay independent.

Quote:
The two Japanese carmakers had initially planned to detail their merger at the end of January.
Honda is said to be taking a close look at Nissan’s restructuring measures before going ahead.
Mitsubishi may stay independent, preferring partnerships over full merger with Honda and Nissan.
Honda president and CEO Toshihiro Mibe put it bluntly: “The integration will not be realized unless Nissan and Honda execute it as two companies that are able to stand on their own feet.”

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Nissan and Honda may call off merger talks.

Honda had sounded out Nissan about becoming a subsidiary, an idea that Nissan had strongly opposed. In December, the automakers had said they aimed to set up a holding company by August 2026, when both of their shares would then be delisted.
The two companies had initially said they planned to decide the direction of the integration by the end of January, but that was later pushed back to mid-February.
Nissan plans to hold its board meeting as soon as Wednesday afternoon, where it will likely vote down Honda's proposal to buy Nissan shares and make it a subsidiary.

A Nissan spokesperson said discussions were ongoing between the companies and there would be an announcement after they finalised their direction in mid-February.

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Looks like the merger talks between Japan's second and third largest car makers Honda and Nissan have hit a roadblock. The dream of having a huge Japanese automaker fit enough to compete globally with Toyota and Volkswagen has turned sour.

Now after the pair were serenading one another, singing love songs, the near breakup just prior to Valentine's Day is making news. Honda wants Nissan to become its subsidiary. Can't imagine that happening says Nissan, invoking the equal terms they were in, all the while when they were going steady.

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Nissan is not in a situation to bargain. Their global sales is dwindling and doesn't have enough liquidity to run the factories next year. No new investments can be made for new models and current line-up is long in the tooth.

To make things worse Chinese automakers are decimating legacy automakers. Nissan should swallow its pride and try to survive the onslaught. Honda is their best chance for survival.

Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi have their own USP and target audience. If they can come under one umbrella but have a separate line-up that reflects their core DNA then they can bring back past glory of Japanese supremacy. Wishful thinking

re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

So Carlos Ghosn's prophecy is coming true now. It was about acquisition of Nissan.

Nissan is left with little option except - Seppuku (samurai act of killing self) as they first tried surviving Renault (seemingly the alliance was never good one all because of restless Nissan & it's antics) then ditch it for Ghar-Wapsi with Japanese partner Honda, where again Nissan's egoist attitude is causing problems.

Clearly they are themselves to blame for having a famed lineup/ brands yet being unable to fight back & then trying piggy-back on others.

Honda is better with the monkey off the back I feel.

Don't want to say, I told you so , but cannot resist . This breakup is AWESOME news for Honda. May the company sharpen its knives, get its mojo back and grow. The unnecessary baggage of Nissan would've sunk Honda.

Thank God! I say this as an ex-owner of 3 Hondas. This was a marriage made in hell. Let some aggressive, rich & ruthless Chinese company buy Nissan and straighten them out. Honda has better things to do.

Unbelievably, it is Nissan who called the merger talks off. This is a company with an ego the size of the planet and is always fighting externally (with longtime partner Renault, its USA dealers, its Indian dealers, Honda...) and internally (Carlos Ghosn & other top management).

Honda doesn't need the baggage of Nissan. Honda needs to sharpen its focus and invest in technology & quality. Honda is smart & knows this. That's why Honda has never been one to carelessly merge with anyone.

Nissan has been destroyed by its CEOs (including the grossly over-rated thief called Carlos Ghosn) and its failing relationship with Renault. Nissan today is a complex web of politicians, old & outdated products that need a serious revamp, disheartened dealers & customers who have abandoned the brand. Nissan cars are only bought in 2024 because of low pricing or easy finance (USA & other countries).

If anyone should get a majority stake in Nissan, it should be a very tough, brutal, efficient & rich Chinese EV company (SAIC, BYD, Geely). They will be ruthless and completely overhaul the company. But because of Japan-China history, I don't think the Japanese will allow that.

Honda Motors Nissan take over

The take over of Nissan Motors Japan by Honda Motors has run in to rough weathers.

During the in the recently held board meeting of Nissan Motors it was decided not to accept Hondas offer to take over Nissan Motors.as its subsidiary. While Nissan Motors is larger than Honda Motors on its sales volume, Honda Motors profitability is much bigger than Nissan Motors.

Both Honda Motors and Nissan Motors declined to comment on the above news.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Nissan wants to replace Honda with a different partner.

Quote:
Nissan CEO tells Honda he wants to end merger talks
Nissan open to working with others, including tech firms
Automaker also open to working with Taiwan's Foxconn
A scrapping of the discussions raises questions about how Nissan, which is in the middle of a turnaround plan, can ride out its latest crisis without external help. Nissan has already announced plans to cut 9,000 workers and 20% of global capacity.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

I agree with other BHPians assessment and I am relieved that whole saga with Nissan has ended favorably for Honda!

Honda has a great reputation even now, after almost a decade of doing nothing in India!
What we need are quality products we got to experience from Honda in early 2000s (read as Civic, Accord, CRV).

If Honda can make in India(2nd option assemble CKD kits) their SUV nameplates(HRV, CRV, ZRV) and export them to RHD countries if they feel sales in India alone may not be justify a dedicated assembly line then we could see a resurgence of Honda cars India.

What we also want to see is a similar level of commitment what Kia is doing with India! Man, the way Kia is launching new cars and entering new segments could be a case study by itself for other legacy carmakers.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Nissan seems to be the one that said 'its not you, its me'. lol.
Reports suggest Foxconn is back on the table. They have already evinced interest to acquire Nissan. There is another party, a technology company, in the mix too but it remains unnamed so far.

It is rumored that the power politics in Nissan is what hurt the Nissan-Renault alliance and now this merger.

There is something cooking out there. For sure.
