Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Ever since I heard of this, it just made me scratch my head. Honda and Nissan have absolutely no synergy and in the US both of them are very different brands.

Nissan has a reputation for being owned by fleets and by people who are for a lack of better words are sketchy. The CVT saga is still fresh in many people’s hearts.

On the other hand Honda can’t stop selling Civic’s and CR-V even if they tried. They are right behind Toyota in terms of perceived reliability and quality.

I could see what Nissan would have gotten out of the merger, but I had no idea what Honda would have gotten out of it. This was just a totally illogical pairing from the get go.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

What Nissan probably needs is a proper purge at the top management level. Their old ways obviously do not work but they don't seem ready to let go of their chairs and their old ways.

The Japanese way of building Consensus rather than having a clear cut vision will not work in the 21st century when everything is moving at so fast and the Chinese are moving at Light speed. Unless they can welcome a proper leader whom the entire company is willing to follow, there is no future for Nissan.

Toyota is still standing because of Akio Toyoda's leadership and clear cut vision. (Except the EV thing). But trust me they know what needs to be done to be successful in the EV market. They just don't want to do it until they develop a battery technology(other than Lithium) that is at the mercy of the Chinese.

Japanese government was pushing this. Deal gets put off the week Japanese PM is visiting the US. Leading contender is Foxconn. Can't help but think there is some diplomatic angle in play with multiple countries involved.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

This was completely as Ghosn had forecasted in the beginning.

Honda was preparing a hidden take-over instead of an equal partnership where both brands could survive independently.
So when Honda took out its real face, Nissan pulled back or else there wouldn't be a Nissan name plate in a few years once they got all the tech resources they had.

Honda will continue what they are doing, the real question will depend on what is Nissan's turn-around action results this year's end. Their sales in the US wasn't bad for CY2024 (Nissan was ~ 1M, Honda ~1.4M)

(So a Honda Type R Nismo and GTR V-Tec is gone )

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Honda would be willing to return to negotiations if the Nissan CEO resigns.

Honda will resume talks with Nissan to form the world's fourth-largest automaker if Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida resigns, the Financial Times reported.

The Nissan CEO is under pressure from within and from Renault to resign.

Uchida has expressed his intention to stay until 2026 but faces pressure to step down in the coming months from board members and Nissan's French partner Renault.

Nissan's board has also begun informal talks about the timing of Uchida's departure.

Mitsubishi benefits from this possible return to negotiations.

Mitsubishi Motors shares rose as much as 8.6 percent after the FT reported that Honda would be willing to restart merger talks if Uchida resigns.

"If integration is back on the table, it would be a win-win for all parties involved," said Tatsuo Yoshida, senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. "If a partnership between Nissan and Honda is reconsidered under Nissan's new leadership, it could be a win-win outcome for both parties," he said.

It would be especially good news for Mitsubishi, whose future is uncertain with struggling Nissan as the major shareholder, he added.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Credit firms slash Nissan’s rating to Junk, one after another.

Nissan said it will slash 9,000 jobs and cut its total output by 20% but that wasn't enough from getting downgraded.

Quote:
Fitch Ratings expects Nissan’s recovery to take longer than initially anticipated.
Upcoming tariffs could add significant pressure on the company’s financial situation.
A 24% drop in Nissan’s sales in China signals deeper trouble for the brand’s future.
As if the Fitch downgrade wasn’t enough, Moody’s also downgraded Nissan’s debt to junk status last week, assigning it a Ba1 rating. With two major financial agencies voicing their concerns, Nissan’s future is looking increasingly uncertain, despite its strong liquidity and solid balance sheet.

Re: Nissan & Honda exploring merger possibilities | EDIT: Merger called off

Uchida may step down as CEO of Nissan next week, and there may be negotiations for a new merger with Honda.

According to multiple reports, Uchida could have to step down as soon as possible next week, which could open the way for Honda to renegotiate a merger with Nissan.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asia reported, citing internal sources, that Uchida is set to resign after serving since 2019 to replace the incoming executive. According to the source, Nissan has come to face a major change in senior management. In addition, Reuters reported that the board of directors met on March 6 to find a new CEO of Nissan.

For those who have a chance to replace Uchida, there are reports that it could be current Nissan executives such as Jeremie Papin as Chief Financial Officer or Ivan Espinosa as Chief Planning Officer.

The change in leadership was decided today during a board of directors meeting and will come into effect on April 1. Additional management changes are planned to “achieve the company's short- and mid-term objectives while positioning it for long-term growth.”

If things continue the way they are, Honda itself will ask for support from international community forget bailing out Nissan

Right now Honda's market cap has crashed over 100 percent from over 60 Billion to 36 Billion and there seems no respite in place for them.
