Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

These sales figures can be misleading for few OEMs, Many had their plant shut downs due to year ends. Hyundai being one of them. In fact in search of discounts two of my known people were looking for Hyundai cars in their uppermost and lower segments and unable to find them. last year in late Dec 2023 I got my Tucson diesel at a very hefty discount which got delivered in first week Jan 2024 and was manufactured in 2023. this year one of my colleagues waited till Dec to avail these discounts but could not find the car and apparently realized that Hyundai stopped assembling Tucsons after Oct 2023 and cleared the stock. now they will start bringing in 2025 models so they don’t have to offer too heavy discounts. And for other cars also they cleared their stocks. I am sure other manufacturers also did this. so Jan numbers would actually be a better indicator to look at dispatches and not December.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Surprised with KIA's numbers doing 8K overall sales in December vs around 20K in November. I guess the case with KIA is that it only has one plant with a monthly production capacity of 21-22K units and they had to cut down the production of other models to ramp up capacity for Syros launch in January? Even if there is demand they cannot sell more than 21-22K units a month with Syros sharing the production capacity with Seltos, Carens and Sonet. They also started assembling Carnival locally from last few months.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the sales data.

The reduced dispatches from factory were expected, knowing that most OEMs had annual maintenance shutdown during last week of December. Few other pointers:

- Mahindra SUVs continue to do good and hope they will continue the uptrends. Most of my friends and close family members are happy with their ownership with Mahindra SUVs.
- Brezza and Ertiga becomes new profit horses for MSIL. CNG is the king here.
- Tata Inspite of bad press, maintaining the dispatches. Harrier and Safari seems to be declining in sales. Tata need to protect these flagship models with more fierce sales advisor & better quality control.
- Honda seems to focus more on exports than the local market. Turbo engine will arrive in 2027, till that time its all NP1-Kai (Amaze) and AP2 (City, Elevate) engines for us.
- Hyundai and Kia seems to struggle amongst the growing competition from everywhere.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

VW-Skoda together doing 9k+ numbers looks good though they have been offering healthy discounts upto 2L on atleast the 1L TSI variants. But most manufacturers except the ones with new launches have been giving discounts of 1L+ due to year end or falling demand.

The numbers from VAG are healthy which should increase above 10k+ combined once Kylaq is in the market from Feb. Based on the feedback from the different service advisors here in Pune, except the minor niggles (rattles, ac tweaks, software update for power windows) the new 2.0 products have proven to be fairly reliable. The group should focus to improve the quality of interiors in the upcoming facelifts/new launches and introduce even the 1.6 MPI engine at lower price as they are already exporting to cars manufactured for Brazil.

I think it is high time Suzuki should kill Jimny off for Indian market at least. There is no serious traction for the product in domestic market with the customers also not seeing any value in the product for the price. Discounts can only carry a product so far. It makes better business sense for the product to be focused on international markets.

Thar has sales number of 7k+ but still not in top 20 whereas Bolero with lesser sales numbers is there. Any reason for that ?

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting to see numbers for mid size SUVs. Taigun, Kushaq and Elevate have clocked healthy growth MoM while Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara going considerably down with Hyryder maintaining the monthly figures more or less. Must be year-end shutdowns by Koreans and MSIL and good to see others showing good numbers relatively. With the recent hike in prices by Koreans and MSIL, it would be interesting to see if the competition heats up or if it's just a one month blip.

Surprised by Kia sales. Sonet sales down from 9000 to 3000 in a month.

I bought my first car Kia Sonet in December and suddenly everyone stopped buying it!

Glad to see VW and Skoda doing some good numbers, although I believe it's due to hefty discounts.

With discounts, it is selling better than the Honda City. That says something. I think with an average of 1000 units, it has kind of settled into an urban lifestyle vehicle niche.

Are you saying that if someone wants a Jimny they should buy it sooner than later?

I'm pretty sure that the moment Jimny production for India stops it starts becoming a "Cult Classic" and everybody want one and will pay a "Cult Premium" for it.

And "enthusiasts" will be cribbing about how they can't find a clean Jimny since almost every vehicle undergoes modification

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Is Maruti S-Presso's total of only 8 cars sold in December 2024 a mistake, is a facelift version coming up, or is Maruti planning to stop manufacturing the car?

Citroen is a case study in having good cars across the line-up and yet struggling to achieve volumes. Basalt numbers are only adding salt to their wound of low sales!
