December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Key points I found -

- Interesting how VW and Skoda 2.0 cars have a 55%-65% MoM increase, probably due to fat discounts(?).
- Tata takes back 2nd from Hyundai.
- What has happened to the Seltos. From selling 10k-12k units per month to now just 2k.
- S-Presso, Celerio, Ignis - 3 digit sale numbers, S-Presso at just 8 seems like an error in counting.
- While November to December sales isn't all that different for most car makers, Kia is down from 20k to 9k units sold, production lapse maybe?

One thing beyond my understanding is why Jeep is continuing its operations in India despite having sales below 500 cars a month.

What was the case with Kia? Seltos, Sonet & Carens all are down in numbers. Was there some factory shutdown in December?

Spresso, Celerio and Ignis show very low numbers. Does that hint at anything?

Amaze and Dzire are showing a nice upward trend for CS segment.

Interesting numbers, even after all the news about 15 lacs discounts Skoda managed to sell only one Superb? Not sure what went wrong.

Looks like S-presso number is a mistake?

And, is there a way to get the split between Thar and Thar Roxx?

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Verna at 800+ and City at 700+ is concerning, hope it’s due to year end. Do not want the lone budget sedan segment to die off.

Not sure what’s the strategy of Jeep. The numbers are lesser than 300 and unless they have some new products in the pipeline it’s gonna be difficult to survive.

And finally Taigun and Kushaq are giving tough competition to Seltos, almost same numbers this month . I am sure Kia numbers are the Dec impact and should go back to normal next month.

Overall a better month for VAG

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It seems that every month, Maruti manages to get one or another car to the top. It started with the Ertiga making a surprise entry at the top a few months back, followed by the Baleno last month, and now it's the Brezza. What matters is that Maruti would be happy to retain the top spot.

The Maruti Baleno managed to secure the top spot last month, although there was hardly any change in sales numbers from October. This month, the Baleno surprisingly dropped to number 14. What happened? Was the Baleno just lucky to reach the top in November?

Once a topper, the Maruti Alto was on the verge of moving out of the Top 20 list last month but managed to gain a few spots to reach number 16. The state of small cars continues to remain bleak, with only four A and B segment cars in the Top 20 list, all of which are from the Maruti family. Maruti continues to dominate the Top 10 count with six models in the list. Last month, they managed to get only one car in the top 4 but were able to capture all top 4 spots this month. Well done, Maruti!

Hyundai continues to have only the Creta in the Top 10, with one more, the Venue, in the Top 15 list. The picture continues to remain bleak for the number 2 manufacturer, or should we say number 3 manufacturer? Warning bells for Hyundai as the Creta is now out of the top 5 list.

The Tata Punch dropped to number 5 from last month's number 3. It looks like the Punch still has a long way to go but is fighting to reclaim the top spot. Besides the Punch, the Tata Nexon also dropped a few positions to number 6 this time around. Unfortunately, those are the only cars from Tata in the Top 20 list. Again, not an ideal situation for a manufacturer aiming to hold on to the number 2 position.

While Hyundai and Tata continue to have only two cars each in the Top 20 list, Mahindra managed to get one more car, making it five cars in the Top 20. Even the Scorpio gained a few spots this month. It looks like Mahindra is making a lot of efforts to make an impact in the Top 20 list, but in my opinion, they still have a long way to go to actually challenge the topper.

It seems the newly launched Dzire connected with people as it pulled itself up to the number 3 position this month.

Sales for the Maruti Invicto continued to rise this month as well. I wonder what is happening? Similarly, sales for the Maruti S-Presso suddenly dropped drastically (the same is the case for the Celerio). I wonder why?

MG continues to sell more cars than Honda for the past three months. It looks like the new Amaze is not getting the numbers to help Honda regain some lost ground.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I guess the sales drop of the Maruti trio (S-Presso, Ignis and Celerio) has to do something with the year end? Remember, these sales figures are dealer dispatches and not actual production numbers. From the past 3-4 years I see these cars have very low dispatches in December. Maybe, Maruti doesn't manufacture these cars in December?

MG Windsor continues in the 3k plus range. I’m seeing a lot of them in tier 2 cities like Hassan and Udupi as opposed to Bangalore. Perhaps it fits the bill for those who travel inter-town as groups looking for lower running costs.

Wonder if total passenger car EV sales crossed the 10,000 mark again in December.

Curious to know the sales figures of Hyundai Nline variants (i20, venue & creta).

These small cars getting way too costlier. At least the urban crowd who wants a second car or beginner car for a new driver, are opting for used versions of these cars instead of brand new ones since there is not much of feature upgradations in the newer ones.

Re: December 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The figures of brands like "Citroen", "JEEP", "Renault" & "Nissan" are alarmingly low. Considering the fact that there are no exciting products coming up from these brands. Can we assume they may quit any time soon ?

Are they really committed to the Indian market ? If yes, what are they going to do to bounce back ?
