Ertiga & XL6 (combined) make for the best-selling Maruti of 2024 | WagonR in the next spot

In 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, along with its 6-seater version, the XL6, outsold the WagonR, which has been the brand’s best-seller for years.

The sales data for the year 2024 shows that Maruti Suzuki sold 1,90,091 units of the Ertiga, registering a growth of 23.7% compared to the previous year. Sales of XL6 grew by 11.7% to 40,686 units. This adds up to combined annual sales of 2,30,777 units. If you also consider the sales of the Rumion (18,099 units), which is Toyota's version of the Ertiga, this figure rises to 2,48,876 units.

The Maruti WagonR was relegated to second place with annual sales of 1,90,855 units. The carmaker sold 1,88,160 units of the Brezza in 2024, which puts it in third place.

The fourth best-selling Maruti was the Swift. It clocked total sales of 1,72,808 units, followed by the Baleno, of which 1,72,094 units were sold.

Also, for the first time in 4 decades, the best-selling model in India wasn’t a Maruti Suzuki. The Tata Punch dethroned the WagonR from the top spot with annual sales of 2,02,030 units.

Even though three of the top 5 best-selling models in India were from Maruti Suzuki, the market share of India’s largest carmaker dropped to 41%.

Maruti should also declare the number of commercial vehicles they sell. The majority of new Ertiga I see are commercial vehicles now, with the Crysta becoming very expensive for normal fleet operators.

Even WagonR, for that matter, owes a good amount of sales to taxi business.

On expected lines, at Ertiga price nothing comes closer, major chunk comes from commercial segment also. Compared to Crysta, Ertiga is economical for both fleet owners and consumers.

Its high time they implement twin cylinder mechanism for CNG which was introduced by TATA.
They should also introduce "XL7" (XL6 with bench seat) for private buyers and Ertiga with captain seats for commercial segment.

Re: Ertiga & XL6 (combined) make for the best-selling Maruti of 2024 | WagonR in the next spot

I would be more interested in the combined sales of the K15C engine cars: Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Grand Vitara, Rumion, Hyryder.

If I am not wrong, the K15C is the largest selling engine currently in India, and if you take exports into consideration, it is a BIG money spinner for Maruti-Suzuki.

Now why this needs to be highlighted, is that it partly explains the reluctance of Maruti to explore strong-Hybrid and EVs in the C1-SUV/C2-SUV/MUV space, since this segment has taken off exponentially in terms of sales and will continue to grow in future. And if Maruti has to make a dramatic shift in the engine/transmission from ICE to EV, that would mean letting go a money spinner like K15C and then working upon an ICE/EV counterpart that would be as successful, but from the grounds up, and that can hit their otherwise healthy margins.

Yes the E-Vitara is coming up, but it has been very late. And they might just be testing the grounds with the EV transition right now.

In my close circle 3 families have bought Ertiga recently because at that price nothing comes closer. They all have large families. Right from base model to Automatic, at each price point Ertiga offers various options. These families have overcome Taxi status of Ertiga and decided to take a plunge what is best for them. All the families have 3 cars garage at the moment which now will be replaced with 2 cars.

It is very simple. Suzuki makes maximum only 10% of total volumes for any model as Taxis. Post sales, if any customer converts a passenger vehicle into a Taxi, no one can control that. Heck, I have seen lots of Mercs and BMWs as Taxis. It is just the sheer number of Suzukis that sell cause more Suzuki branded Taxis to be visible. The future in general will be fleet only.
For context, I see Teslas both as Fleet Taxis and private vehicles. That does not really denigrate the brand. It is just that, in India, the maintenance of Taxis is poor.

Can you post similar figures for Baleno + Glanza and Fronx + Taisor? Effectively these are the same vehicles underneath.

Doesn't that just get rid of the difference of XL6 and the Ertiga as the difference between the XL6 was that it had a captain chair, so if the Ertiga got that, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the XL6?

I was wondering how our car (from my review) was featured in Team BHP newsletter!

That aside, Ertiga seems good value for money - we were looking for a city vehicle under 10lakhs ex-showroom and the Ertiga Vxi fit the bill perfectly. Already have a diesel Brezza.

Plus I'm impressed that Maruti is the only company offering Mild-hybrid tech with a separate lithium ion battery (not just start stop functionality). It doesn't account for much in terms of power or fuel efficiency, but makes new tech accesible to more people. Lower taxation for vehicles priced under 10 lakhs (even though this is 1500cc) was also one of the reasons - why pay more taxes, already middle class has been squeezed out.

It's not just the 6 seats. The slightly more upright bonnet with four-chamber LED headlights, UV cut windows, great looking alloys, ventilated seats make the XL6 much more up-market than plain Jane Ertiga. Captain seats are fabulous but many buyers need 7 seats and XL6 misses out on that. In fact, Suzuki sells XL7 with Ertiga's bench seat in Indonesia. At present, the only major feature XL6 misses out on is a sunroof. My neighbour test drove my new XL6 and traded his ailing Tata Harrier for an automatic XL6 within weeks - he's loving the fuel efficiency, refinement and interior space.

Re: Ertiga & XL6 (combined) make for the best-selling Maruti of 2024 | WagonR in the next spot

Great news this!
But frankly am not one bit surprised, reasons below:

7 Seater - Check
Moderate boot space - Check
Good Fuel efficiency - Check
Good After sales service - Check
Decent automatic - Check
Decent Sound, interiors, good ergonomics - Check

When I booked my Ertiga, there were many who asked why I was buying a Taxi segment vehicle. I told them, at that price [in 2019] nothing even came close to my requirements and moreover the tag of 'Taxi Segment' did not matter to me. Needless to say, am satisfied with the vehicle [mine is a 1.5 Diesel] overall.

Yes, I am missing out on Sunroof, a better audio and other such bling features. But, am ready to trade them for the above features which I've listed.

Thanks for the info! But with this info, after the XL7 releases, people who were planning on buying the Ertiga ZXI would move to this, wouldn't they? So wouldn't that make certain variants of the Ertiga obselete? Just asking for a friend.

For me, major differences are in styling, I would anytime prefer XL6's black interiors over Ertiga's beige. Bit subjective, but would prefer external look of XL6 also, but captain seats may not be suitable for all private buyers.

Same way many Innova with captain seats are doing duty as cabs, since there is a market, Have seen XL6 doing duty as cab also but what If a fleet owner is not interested in extra cost and features just wants to go with VXI CNG with captain seats?

If the XL7 is to be released, my opinion, MS should discountinue the top models of the Ertiga as I doubt fleat owners will buy ZXI etc. and the private buyers would buy the XL7. Additional question, why do some fleet owners use the Hycross even though the Crysta is still on sale?
