Scoop! Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid spotted testing

According to media reports, Maruti Suzuki is developing a strong hybrid powertrain for its mass-market products. The new powertrain is said to debut on the Fronx facelift (codenamed: YTB).

Now, for the first time, a Maruti Fronx with a hybrid unit under its bonnet has been caught testing. The test mule was spotted on the streets of Gurgaon.

As you can see, the test vehicle had no camouflage whatsoever. It looks like a regular Fronx; that is, until you see the 'Hybrid' badge. On the current model, the ‘Fronx’ badge is on the left side of the boot lid. This one has it on the right-hand side.

Reports suggest that Maruti’s first strong hybrid powertrain will be based on the Z12E engine. It will feature a series hybrid setup, wherein the petrol engine will work as a generator.

If media reports are anything to go by, the Fronx hybrid could arrive sometime in 2026.

Could it be the export spec 1.5L Fronx?

That one's a mild hybrid and gets the same 'Hybrid' badge. Although that 'Fronx' badge is on the other side.

This might likely be the Fronx Series Hybird (Range Extender Hybrid). It has been rumored for a year and will have mileage of 35-40kmpl as per Auto Car India.

Waiting eagerly for this. Can be a better option than an EV.
No range anxiety. No charging hassles. No battery replacement cost uncertainty...
Will have Odd-Even exemptions in NCR.
Also, is it a regular hybrid or series hybrid as proposed by Maruti Suzuki?

A strong hybrid would just cannibalize sales of the Grand Vitara. This is one model from Maruti that sells highly on the way it looks i feel. It looks cool and with a strong hybrid to back up those looks- possible recipe for market domination. May eat into brezza market too. Of course, pricing matters.

It will be a series hybrid, and Fronx is reported to get that technology first.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid spotted testing

This is a smart move by Maruti as they want to get their lost market share especially with the diesel cars. This is smart because, the Fronx has been one of the best selling Maruti cars of late and the engine area is able to accommodate the series hybrid powertrain.

They are probably not choosing the Brezza for this because, Brezza is already believed to be expensive and bringing in a hybrid variant would make no sense with the Grand Vitara's price bracket.

I remember reading the original ACI post indicated the engine would be a 800cc generator offering economy figures of ~35 to 40 kpl. If the 1.2 Z12E would be as economical as that engine, then people who were looking for the diesel engine, will love this. Hope Maruti brings in this vehicle this year before the festive season.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid spotted testing

I wonder if Suzuki could update their 800cc engine and revive it again as a hybrid generator. I think the larger engines have greater torque, this making them better as a generator. If Suzuki can figure out how to increase torque from the little engine, they could even achieve 60+ kmpl.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid spotted testing

Maybe it's immaterial here, but that "Hybrid" badge at the rear is used by Maruti on the mild hybrid versions of the Grand Vitara and some other cars. The strong hybrid of the Grand Vitara uses a different "Hybrid" badge.
However, I really hope that Maruti mainstreams the strong hybrid engine in India.

Grand Vitara Hybrid has a "HYBRID" badge with black and copper background, whereas Grand Vitara NA has a "smartHYBRID" badge with silver and blue color background.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid spotted testing

The Series Hybrid will come to the Fronx but i don't see it materializing before 2026 or 2027. It's a tech that Suzuki does not have available ready made and are developing for the first time. Even then, again I don't see 30-40kmpl types FE figures. At best may be 2 or 3 kmpl at most or slightly more. At least, that is what Nissan extracted and they are masters of the Tech.

If I am not wrong, the new Swift gets the series hybrid in Japan already.

No. It doesn't. It's the 48V Mild Hybrid I think that it gets.

According to an autocar article from 2024, Suzuki plans to launch their series hybrid Fronx in 2025 and series hybrid Baleno in 2026. So the chances of the new Fronx releasing this year are quite high, though I'm not sure if they'll release it in India first.
