Also reminds of the GST notice to Infosys few months earlier which was later dismissed.

Kia seems to have imported the items through 2 different ports to evade.

Also, one line says "Kia was accused of importing more than 90% of the parts for Carnival, constituting a car in CKD form, which attracts higher tax, it added"

So there is a limit on the number of parts you can import which means you cannot replace all parts ? (like frame for ex) What is the limit in law ?

Tax terrorism at its finest. Our customs are stuck in the british raj while we try to push for make in india.

Know someone whose motorcycle is stuck in the port for more then a month even after paying duties.

The GOI has gone mad. And these Tax authorities are misusing their powers.
Driving these international manufacturers to early demise with this unwarranted Tax terrorism.
Im sure their MIS is totally wrong.
Or is it some clever manipulation by our domestic manufacturers?

Looks like our government is on an extortion mode. This trend extends to MSMEs too with GST department working overtime to target everyone with everything with the hope that something sticks. They are only keen to increasing their revenue by any means. Many businessman settle for some fine just to avoid the hassles with the case and concentrate on business. With the economic slowdown, businesses are already struggling but the government just wants to increase the revenue.

Now imagine, if such a claim was made with Jeep or Citroen. Looks like the tax dept is on a mission to kill certain automakers.

These companies evade and evade taxes according to the government neither get noticed, but don't come under the scanner. Only when the amount touches something in several millions or billions of US $ does such evasion make headlines.

Mainly they want to give good returns to FDI investors, who always pray on emerging markets / where it's costs less to produce without much tax headache.

But end customers are real ones who pays the tax indirectly

Who knows what a "part" is, one can always argue that each sub-component or sub-sub-component is composed of parts unless it in decomposed to metals and screws.

Our Babus love discretionary powers to Authorities and keeping everyone else confused. Reminds me of popcorn tax fiasco.
