Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

For a very long time, the Maruti Ciaz was competing for a top 3 position in the C2 sedan segment, taking on the likes of Honda City and the Hyundai Verna. But as we have seen over the years, the segment is shrinking and people are moving towards SUVs.

There’s not much wrong with the Ciaz as a product. It is good value for money, has a spacious cabin, refined petrol engine, compliant ride quality and a 4-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. The big problem, however, is that there has been no major update since 2018, and now, Maruti is expected to pull the plug on the Ciaz. This makes it a very interesting time for the Ciaz in the used car market. Firstly, the current owners of the Ciaz wouldn’t want to keep a car that has been discontinued for a long time and would be looking to sell. Given the added number of cars entering the used car market, the prices will most likely drop. That makes for a great opportunity for some people looking for a sorted sedan at an affordable price. So, if you are in the market for a mid-size sedan, would you consider buying the Maruti Ciaz?

Used Maruti Ciaz Pros

• Great value for money. Prices likely to drop further now that the car is going to be discontinued
• Good availability, given that the car has been on sale for a decade
• Clean styling & big footprint. Among the longest & widest sedans it its class
• Spacious cabin with lots of practical features. Rear legroom is particularly impressive
• Smooth and refined 1.5-litre petrol motor. Pre-2020 models also available with a diesel
• Soft, compliant ride quality. A suspension that's tuned for comfort
• Big 510-liter boot will swallow your airport & holiday luggage
• Maruti’s excellent after-sales service, wide dealer network & fuss-free ownership experience
• Equipment such as the automatic LED headlamps, DRLs, 7" touchscreen ICE, rear sunshade, cruise control, telematics system etc.

Used Maruti Ciaz Cons

• Even if you buy a year-old car, it still feels old. There have been no updates since 2018
• Resale value will drop considerably when it’s time for you to sell
• 1.5L petrol & 1.3L diesel don’t offer much in terms of performance
• The 4-speed Automatic gearbox is old & outdated. No Diesel AT option either
• Average under-thigh support of the low rear seat. Also, limited rear headroom for 6-footers
• Light build & ordinary interior quality. Competitors feel more solid
• Misses out on some feel-good features like 6 airbags, sunroof, auto-wipers & more
• While Maruti will provide support for Ciaz, eventually, parts availability could be an issue

Mod Potential

Performance mods aren’t the first thing you think of when you talk about the Ciaz. It’s a comfortable sedan that focuses on a smooth driving experience. But if you want some extra bit of performance, there are some remaps available in the market for the 1.5-litre petrol engine as well as the 1.3-litre diesel engine. Other than this, you will find a bunch of aesthetic mods in the aftermarket to spruce up your ride.

Availability

The Ciaz has been on sale for over a decade, which means that its availability is good. However, it is worth noting that the overall sales in the sedan segment have been on a decline for a few years. Also, as mentioned earlier, the Ciaz hasn’t received a significant update since 2018. Both these factors mean that if you are looking for a car that’s less than 5 years old, there are not many options available. If you’re okay with purchasing an older vehicle, there are quite a few options available in the used car market. There was also a 1.5-litre BS4 diesel that was introduced for a very brief period, but looking for that variant is like chasing a unicorn. Check out some examples on sale here.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

I owned a CIAZ ZDI+ for about 8 years in NCR and had to replace it with a heavy heart due to idiotic GRAP rules every now and then in winters.

It used to be a very practical Sedan with a comfortable suspension for a regular city drive coupled with enough ground clearance (175mm) to escape potholes.

However, for today’s time ,the car is only useful as a sedate Chaffeur driven ride. The extinct creed of sedan lovers wouldn’t like the not so exciting engine options and close to neutral handling.

CIAZ can be a perfect candidate for premium taxi services or Uber black ,if allowed.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

I love the car and recently when I was in the market, I did evaluate a few used Ciaz. Great VFM, truly fill it,shut it & forget it car. I even considered a new Ciaz to be honest. The decade old 4 speed AT gear box, gets the job done. The car was spacious and comfortable. Wasn't quick but was good enough to keep up with traffic in the city. Eventually, ended up with a Honda Elevate but I still have a lot of respect for this car.
If I have to get a second car, would go for it with my eyes closed!

I voted a YES for a very specific use case - It will be strong contender when I'll be looking for a slow comfortable sedan for my parents in the near future. It would be primarily chauffer driven and a slow no-nonsense car is all they need. The light coloured interior would also fit perfectly in my list of good-to-haves as I suspect dark interiors make my folks a little claustrophobic.

No offence to any owners, but Ciaz is one among the most boring cars I have ever driven. Even the interiors and exteriors are boring too. It is still selling just because it’s a Maruti and people trust that. The only use case for this car is a practical and trouble free one, which I think Honda City does better than Ciaz. So if I am really in need of a used car with Ciaz strengths, I would go for a City (another car which I am not a fan off).

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

My cousin when she was in search of a cheap car in Dubai for her daily running wand looked at a few options, ranging from Nissan Sunny, Toyota Yaris, MG 5, quite a lot of other Chinese brands, Honda City and so on. It was then that I thought why not the Ciaz? I suggested the Ciaz to her and she was like, she hadn't even thought about a Suzuki. Suzuki's aren't as popular in the UAE as they are here! so she visited the Suzuki showroom nearby and was impressed, at around 52000 AED, The Ciaz had everything she wanted and then some at a price which didn't burn a hole in the pocket.

Mind you, it is the same car sold here with hardly any difference and it is a great option for those on a budget anywhere in the world, a cheap, reliable car with tons of space, easy maintenance, service availability and most of the basic features covered.

However recently a hailstorm hit her area and the car was outside and declared a total loss, it was such a heartbreak for us, and finally we decided to move on and decided to look at another option from the insurance money received.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

I really like this car. It looks classy, has a large footprint with excellent interior space, and features a very comfortable suspension. The engine is truly a "fill it, shut it, forget it" type—reliable and hassle-free.

For someone seeking a spacious, no-nonsense car for chauffeur-driven or relaxed driving, the Ciaz is a strong contender. While it’s not the most exciting car to drive, it benefits from a traditional sedan architecture that offers better handling compared to similarly priced compact SUVs. Plus, it comes with a large boot, providing ample space for your luggage.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

Yes, I have had two Ciaz's and a total of 1.8lakh km run on them combined.

What a car! only once I had to replace a 'spring' in my clutch and the front discs, nothing else.
(Please note: expenditure on repairs over the years was not more than 10k in total, combined.)

Everything holds up well, good engine, rewards you with excellent efficiency on a light foot, oodles of space and a big boot.

Nothing to complain.

Maruti Ciaz can easily compete with a 4.3M SUV in terms of practicality and none of them can beat it.

True 5 seater family car.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

To me, the question is old car vs new car value proposition. A used Ciaz can be found in the market for a ballpark figure of 5-6 Lakhs easily.

Many here point out that the car is boring and the engine options are not as exciting. When in the used car market we look for reliability and fuss-free ownership. It is this unexciting engine that will give you that reliability. The spare parts are not expensive and its not a difficult car to repair.

I own a S-cross 1.6, its built on the same platform. The interior space is almost the same in both the cars. I have lost count of the number of occasions the interior space was a blessing.

Sure, the car has its weak points. The headlights are poor and the suspension is not the best when the car is fully loaded.

What you get for 5-6 Lakhs with a Ciaz is pure value. I voted Yes.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

I have Ciaz zdi (fiat 1.3 engine), this is a no nonsense car, with a huge boot, excellent and comfortable space inside the car (5 adults can sit comfortably for extended period of time) and with hatchback kind of maintenence and running costs.

I have no rusting issues or any kind of issues, In fact this is a fill it, shut it and forget it kind of car, this is not a high performance car, but is more than adequate for Indian roads, 120 speed all day, with AC in full blast no problem, I get atleast 17kmpl even in ghat sections and in a full loaded car.

The only reason I would ever sell this car is when government makes it illegal to own old cars and yes, if you are in market for a used car, a Honda city with same age will be atleast 1.5 to 2 lakhs expensive but you won't really notice any major performance upgrades.

I would definitely try to get the 1.5 diesel which came with the Ciaz and Ertiga. The 1.3 diesel doesn't excite and 1.5 is an alright option but that 1.5 diesel is a gem.

Only if it is the one with that stonking 1.5 Diesel. For all other aspects, it is IMO unfortunately forgettable.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

NO.

Ciaz is a great car with a good-looking design and a comfortable ride on the back seat. I would love to have bought it 10 years ago but not now, mainly for the below reasons.

=> It is a great city car but only for the back seat. You will not feel that enthusiastic nature while driving. This matters in the era of Vitrus and Verna.

=>The interior is no match to 2025 standards (same is the story with Honda City)

=>Finally Marutis Safety standards.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Maruti Ciaz

I would buy the Ciaz only if I get it in the diesel variant. My relative has a used diesel Ciaz, and I have had plenty of opportunities to drive it. We have taken road trips to Kasol, Mahakumbh, and even South India in the Ciaz. It is a simple fill-it-and-forget-it car, offers excellent fuel economy, and is very easy and cheap to maintain.
