Good move. Good intentions. Altho as GTO said, FE cars anyway rule the roost and will continue to do so in India. This ruling will have the effect of bringing all car mfrs in line atleast abt engine technology.

Is this happening anywhere else in the world currently ?

Good move by the government ... But wait is for 2 years . Why not implement now itself ?

Am waiting for the other shoe to drop. Manufacturers will blame oil companies for short delivery (i.e., cheating by retailers), adulteration, etc., for mileage not being met. After all, majority petrol/diesel retailers are Government owned. When governments cannot guarantee their own products, how can they insist on private manufacturers to deliver?

Great move. This test is done on a dyno so there is no room for error. Currently US, EC and Japan all have different driving cycles so the same car will show different FE numbers.

Another good thing, they can tax cars based on FE and drop the 4 meter rule.

Interesting and a very valid point. Lets see how they tackle it.

In US it is done by a third party (Fuel Economy | US EPA) which uses a variety of test conditions to arrive at an average figure (one for city, another for highway).

it makes more sense to have something like that if govt is really going for this initiative.

The article says the govt. had given the industry four years to set a voluntary standard. It's obvious the manufacturers waited for the govt to make it's move knowing they would anyway be given more time. Somewhat related to this would be the timing of the Euro IV introduction in India.

Another interesting bit in the article is "Besides, progressive standards will also force the industry to improve car engines and not allow them to sell outdated and inefficient designs being phased out in richer countries."

I wonder how many of the engines in the cars currently sold in India are in use in "richer" countries.

Lets hope it comes to effect pretty soon, but on the either side should we sniff a halt to it, if the car companies join hand and start protesting for the adulterated fuel we get here as the engines are tested on much better fuel ?

The Automotive Research Association of India will certify the mileage of vehicles before they are launched

When the Nano gets launched later this year, as Ratan Tata has said, it may come with a certified fuel efficiency indicator that other passenger car and two wheeler manufacturers across the country will provide next year.

These fuel efficiency figures will be displayed at the company’s dealerships. They’ll also be supplied to buyers along with the documentation of the product.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), a government-industry cooperative that tests vehicles for conformity to norms under Central Motor Vehicle Rules, will certify the mileage before they are launched. Nano got this certificate on Thursday.

“ARAI tests each vehicle for fuel efficiency in any case so it does not mean any new procedure to be included into a manufacturer’s manual,” said Dilip Chenoy, director general, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). “So far, these figures were kept secret but now they will have to be made public.”

The move will put to rest increasing competition between car and 2-wheeler companies on fuel efficiency stakes and make it transparent. However, the figure will only be indicative in nature and companies can’t be taken to task if the product fails to deliver the mileage claimed.

“The process will start from January and will be completed by April 1,” said Ravi Kant, president, SIAM.

This is a good development. This was already discussed by govt around 6 months back to make this mandatory for all automobile companies. Hope it will come into effect as planned.

Good idea if done as in the US by EPA which includes more "normal driving conditions" such as

• Faster Speeds & Acceleration
• Air Conditioner Use
• Typical Outside Temperatures

This brought down some tall claims from car manufacturers. For example FE of Prius came down from 55 to 46 mpg.
