Suzuki sells more in India than in Japan

NEW DELHI: When Osamu Suzuki-san came to India a few months ago, he challenged Maruti Udyog to beat the Japanese parent to become the largest Suzuki operation anywhere in the world. That milestone is in sight. In fact, it has already edged ahead, according to DNA Money data.
“We hope to cross the 7- lakh vehicle mark next fiscal,” Jagdish Khattar, managing director, Maruti Udyog, told DNA Money in an exclusive interview.
While Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC) is the third-largest automobile maker in Japan, Maruti is the largest car maker in India. And compared to an average 3% growth rate SMC has been registering in Japan year-on-year, Indian operations have posted much higher growth rates. During the last nine months alone, Maruti saw sales grow 16%.
If it still looks a lofty target for Maruti to achieve, here’s some math. Last fiscal, SMC sold 7.07 lakh vehicles while Maruti reported 5.61 lakh vehicle sales.
If the growth rate of each market is taken into account, SMC is expected to close 2006-07 at about 7.28 lakh vehicles and close to 7.5 lakh next fiscal. However, if Maruti continues with its good performance, then it may well end up selling close to 6.5 lakh units this year and take it closer to 7.5 lakh in 2007-08. So, Khattar’s wish could well come true. Khattar’s enthusiasm stems not only from the hard work his team has been putting in, but also from the boost in production capacity, with the addition of a second manufacturing plant last month.
But does India’s expected dominance in the Suzuki brand mean Suzuki would shift base to India? Khattar only smiled at the question, but his enthusiasm makes it clear that Maruti Udyog is poised to maintain its comfortable lead over all other car makers in India for at least some more time to come.
Which is perhaps why Suzuki has already committed Rs 9,000 crore in this country till 2010 and does not seem concerned over Nissan’s no-show on the other small-car project.

Suzuki brought japanese values to maruti, while maruti brought indian values to suzuki ,mix the two and we got one great company.Yes the suzuki-maruti marriage did have some rough times as well,But hats off to all involved including GOI for ensuring that the partnership could move forward in a positive manner.

The best part is maruti-suzuki does not want to rest on its laurels and is continuosly striving for betterment,case in point even today just check customer service from maruti for a maruti 800 owner even.Another thing really impressive is Maruti is ready to change with the times,for instance we get the estilo for the old zen something which was once never even thought of in maruti circles earlier[model discontinuation],bringing the swift to india,introduction of modern diesel engines and the list can go on.

Probably because Suzuki's cars are not much appreciated in the other parts of the world but in India thanks to Maruti's reading the average indian car buyer pshyche perfectly the story is different.

In India the car buying publis are not yet matured to the fact that you have to pay a price for modern technology/safety and moreover cars are still highly taxed with respect to their counterparts elsewhere.

Maruti has set a scorching pace even with its not so fresh products and no real sedan or diesel (so far). with some new products it has potential to do even better.

It is a classic example of taking technology and adapting it to Indian conditions (especially pricing) and eventually designing products in India for India and the rest of the developing world. Ford has tried to do something similar and gained some success. Those who have taken a world product and priced it as a cost plus model have not really seen runaway success. Hyundai had a plot, but seem to be loosing it - tracking and following the diesel/CNG need was one classic example.

It will be interesting for a similar casing examples in the segments of C and above to follow this model.

Suzuki India well-deserved this growth, especially considering their performance in the last 5 years. Great products, value-pricing and the best customer service in the country. Congratulations!

Can you believe that Suzuki was not even short-listed by the Government, when they were looking for a partner to Maruti? Top honchos actually referred to the World Car book and shortlisted VW, among others.
