@directinjection - the second pic is a photoshop.
I think they may have just taken an indica and made it a notchback.
I doubt the longer wheelbase of the Indigo would be used.

I have seen this car many times on Pune roads, mostly Saras baugh, Tilak road, near Govt. Eng college on Pune - Bombay road. I am not sure which engine it has but it really runs very fast on signals and bumper -to- bumper traffic. In few of them engine make good/bad noise on road. I have seen very good leg space at rear just like XL. I think tyres are also big ones.

I think it would have to be Viva like. The current Indigo trunk can take a ..well, trunk. Cant fit a decently sized hard luggage if the boot door is as small as it looks in the pic. A Viva-like true notchback would be a real killer

Looks like Tata wants to squeez every drop of the current indica platform before phasing it out... and come out with as many variants it can. I think it is a good strategy. If a customer wants something more than an Indica but doesn't like the Indigo's looks.. now he has an option of going for the indica notch. I hope the notch comes with the 100bhp petrol & DICOR engines.

I am not sure but some people say this indigo will come in Diwali. If it comes in Jan 08, may have short life as Tax duty structure may change & will lose the tax benefit. Any idea?

That makes me wonder if TOI was refering to this vehicle as the new variant of Indica.

MOD NOTE: Do not quote a full size picture for a one liner. It is clear to everybody as to which photo you are talking about.

For all you know, it might be a mule testing new components. Somehow, bringing this version out towards the end of the Indigo's product life does not make sense IMHO

This one I saw twice on old mumbai-pune road. Once I got to have a front look for 4-5 sec, I observed they have face lifted the front headlight. It was dark when I saw it and headlight were different than the current Indigo/Indica.

I don't know about this. So can you please explain how/for which components can this be used for testing?

@tushky: Looks like your non-disclosure time limit laid down by Autocar India has expired! Good show as usual, keep it up!

From the C pillar rake, a Viva-like rear is ruled out.
To me, the rear looks somewhat like that of Ikon.
What say? Should definitely look better than the regular Indigo.

Tata has a tuner in Coimbatore for tuning their petrol engines.

*************
Indica @ 180 kmph
Times of India — March 21, 2003

It is a conventional but sprawling shed off the Coimbatore-Cochin highway. It is only when you approach the gate of Jayem Automotives that you will perhaps hear the snarl of a beast. Beware, it's a tigress - the fastest one on Indian roads. Is it a Honda City Vtec, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Lancer, Ford Ikon NXT, Skoda Octavia? Wrong. It goes by the name of Tata Indica.

Here is the full article:
