Do you remember when the honeycomb grill was introduced? Speaking in terms of KL-11 number series, I think sometime during the C was where it started though I don't remember the year/month exactly

I believe it was 1995. Ours is a KL-01-F reg one. I have seen E reg cars with the horizontal slat grill.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

The amber parking lights were replaced by white ones in 93 so did the steel wheels caps replaced by black plastic caps. The honey-comb grill came out by end of 94. I'm pretty sure about this.

The rear split seats came out in 95.

During this period M800 attracted a premium of up to Rs 40K as there was a big gap between demand and availability. MUL then introduced a Tat Kal version named TK at a premium adopting a make hey when it shines policy.
We are moving away from the topic and perhaps, a similar thread on SB308 appears imminent.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

I think we are going way off topic now.

I found a post in another thread, and this car has a bonnet release, dual color bumper lights and a mesh grill! Most probably, the grill and lights might have been changed.

EDIT:

MODS, can we move these posts to a separate dedicated thread for the 2nd generation Maruti 800?

[quote=zenren;3324925]What I mentioned was that it wasn't 94 for sure, (which you were so sure of till now) since there were cars in my family with white parking lights that were bought before 94.))

I never mentioned that I was sure about 94 ,but i that it was not 88.I was under the impression that it was part of the facelift which took place in 1994.It was only today that I got it confirmed that the change of indicator lens preceded that and that change occured in 1993.

((I see a big difference between assembling a car in India using imported parts and producing a car in India using localised parts. I don't consider a car to be produced in India if all parts are imported from elsewhere. Its merely assembled in India till then. CKD is still treated as import and not local manufacture. I said "production started in 88" by that logic. If you consider local assembly as "production", then I'll rephrase it as "when we stopped importing Japanese parts."

I had a SB308 of 86 make in the family which had most Japanese parts and was just assembled in India. AFAIK, this model was available only till 88 (or probably 87 end as you say) which was replaced by the model with Indigenous parts substituted for Japanese parts. The next change to 800 (that I was aware of) happened somewhere in 95 timeframe. 88 was the only year where 800 got a conspicuous change before the facelift in 94-95 and hence I thought the amber lights might have been changed to white as part of starting local production in India. If that was an isolated change, then I can only guess it as some time between 88-91 since no one I know bought any M800 during that period. The later cars came with white lights.
For your Kind information, local vendors started supplying to maruti even from 1984.The first few SS80 standard models came with Tempalex Windshields whereas it was substituted by SAFEX later.Whereas the Tinted glass in SS80DX were imported whereas in SB308IN it was supplied by INDIAN supplier.
Similarly the horn in 1984 SS80 was japanese, later became Indian.By the time SB308IN was introduced there was about 30 percent local content in it.the rear shock absorbers were supplied by GABRIELA in 1986 itself.
The Front struts were japanese only till 1987. Actually the Gabriela shocks supply contract granted led to a CBI inquiry against a former CEO of MUL.Those Shocks were of low quality.
So there is nothing much special about 88 regarding maruti 800 because it was a continuing process .
by the way I thought only CBU and SKD was considered as import and not CKD.

BTW, I didn't claim I'm 100% sure of the dates though you sounded as if you didn't have even the slightest doubt about what you were saying!
That is your assumption my dear friend,Sorry about that

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Saw this neat beautifully done up SS80 last week near Mekhri Circle. Looks like a daily driver. The interiors were also color coded. The only oddities were the towel like cloth which covered the rear parcel tray and two really long antennae - one in front (where the original SS80 antenna used to be) and one at the rear.

Hello

Below is my June 86 model car. I think this is the model you are referring to. Though not the proper thread but I thought may be this will put to rest some of the doubts. The car is the deluxe model and has original leather seats and thick carpet. It came with a cassette player and a radio which has only AM/MW. The headlights are stanley sealed beams with tokai denso lenses all around. It recent crossed the 40k mark. And yes, the paint is original

Thanks a lot torque18!
Thats a wonderfully maintained car, and it is indeed the one which we all are referring to.

It has been a long time since I saw an 800 with this grill.

Were the rear logos at the same positions throughout? And the wheel hubs chrome plated?

Thanks!

Yes the the hub caps are original chrome plated and the logos are as they came. Back then they wrote 'Deluxe' which later got 'DX'. Sorry for the bad quality pictures, they are from my blackberry.

Fine car and that was my favourite colour and I was about to settle for a similar used car in 1990 but did not materialize then. You know. there were not many cars in the used car market then.

On the topic, yes before the introduction of the DX signage in the SB308 for the deluxe version, the Deluxe monogram was in italics. Subsequently the deluxe version was discontinued and an AC TG version was introduced with only Air Conditioner and Tinted Glasses all around and without a Radio/Cassette player. This was later on again launched as the deluxe version with the DX signage. This also had upholstery with cloth inserts.
