Maybe they do only the superficial 'servicing' like wax polish, tyre polish, bumper and grille and plastic 3M polish, "car shampoo" wash and something that makes your car interior smell nice, rather than any mechanical work!

Holy smokes! I want to smoke what this guy is smoking.

Jokes apart, such schemes are really crappy. Yes, they are collectible, but not 4lac worth collectible.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Recently came across a chocolate SS80 which is currently owned by a garage owner who bought this and driven by road to his place for restoration. But due to his busy schedule he dropped the plan and it's been neglected for the past two years. Now he is willing to sell it now my question is what would be the best price as he asked me to give my quote. He claims that floor and tinkering work is there on the body rest all is fine. Engine is running condition he started when I visited to his workshop.

One more question is can we source a good body rather than restoring this?

And how much it would cost to bring to its glory.

Even the paint was JAPANESE-really!!

The Deluxe (DX) version was launched as a premium car in those days and was available only on Foreign Exchange (NRI) payments (correct me If I am wrong). The differences from the "Standard" model were tinted glass (Suzuki Temperlite), Nippon Denso A/C, Maruti Clarion radio with Clarion HiFi speakers and external antenna on right A-pillar, digital clock (green digits) on the dashboard (centrally located), beige colour, Stanley leather seat covers and velvety floor carpet + rubber mats with Suzuki logo. It cost about Rs. 30,000 more than the base version.

Maruti SS80 DX - the best Maruti of all times.
Ah yes! The SS80 800 and other older Maruti Suzuki's. I own a 1999 ZEN as of right now. Sadly it is not road legal right now! Bummer! But still I am restoring the car back to its original condition. Older Maruti's Indeed are very well built. My Suzuki's interior has held up well and the exteriors too! In my opinion older Japanese made components looked better and I guess they were higher quality too... I personally love how the SS80 looks. it was classy rare and kind of quirky( i think) never really liked the last gen of the 800, looked kind of cheap.

Hi Speedy , that car seems like it indeed deserves a new lease of life. However, the rust looks pretty bad. And once you take off the wings, you'll probably find even more ! Also , you should find out about the validity of the documents of the car as that is important to have in order while picking old cars like these. In my opinion, if you wish to pick it up in the current state, you should not pay more than 30k or 35k tops. The body although rusty doesn't seem like it's beyond repair , a lot of the rust is surface rust , but it will go worse in no time considering how badly these ss80s rust !
If you can source a body that's less rusty , nothing like it ! Else you will have to make do with this one.
Restoring the car to its original glory will cost a healthy packet (above 40k) . But it can be done ! Do note that there are some original bits that need to be added too .

Many congratulations! That car looks to be a good one. I do remember reading that you intend to take the car to Hyderabad. I wanted to know how will ownership transfer work as this car looks to be Mysore registered. So that will involve NOC from Karnataka and then re-registration in Telangana.

Your experience/plan will help prospective SS80 buyers like me.

Obviously all pre89 registered cars will be having the 3 letter registration number. If it is not in Vahan data base, you can approach the rto where it was registered and find out the status.
Hi ajay99. I was unsuccessful in finding our old SB308 and may never be able to find it. I am thinking of getting a SS80 from the used market. I've started the search. I wanted to know what is the availability of parts, specially stuff like tail lights, interior trims as many cars that I see on sale will need some of these parts replaced.

Most of the mechanical parts except a few like front struts are not available.
The Tail lamps-Tokai denso not available, but aftermarket Alpha toyo available.
Many interior trim parts are still available but you may have to search.
Things which are very difficult to source-Rain channel trim, Stanley sealed beams etc.

Hi, Thanks.
I drove the car solo from BLR to HYD over 12 hours. Zero hassles along the way. Maintained a top speed of between 80 - 90 kmph and went to 110-120kmph on certain long stretches of downhill. Was a wonderful experience. Even the driving position and ergonomics were lovely. It's Chikmaglur registered, not Mysore. I got the car registered in my cousins name in Bangalore and took the new RC with me. No issues for me using it in Hyderabad.

Thanks again ajay99. If I am reading that response right, you are saying that most mechanical parts are not available. And front sturts are usually available. Or was it the other way around?

SS80's travel from Mysore to new home in Coorg

Hi All,

This is the car, my uncle Rtd Col in Army owned for long time and travelled across India, where all he was posted. After he retired from Army he settled in Mysore for good. The car original registration was HYX (Ambala, Haryana) and its 1985 Maruti SS80. Recently the registration got changed to Karnataka RTO. I enjoyed travelling in this car when ever I visited him. One fine day in last Feb during Covid lockdown I got a call from my uncle telling he want to give away his car due to parking problem. Without any delay next day early morning landed in his house with my driver for negotiation. With in 1Hr everything settled, collected all documents and manuals and left to Coorg. Here are few pics of the car I am sharing.

Thanks

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Continuing my previous thread. This car didn't needed any major restoration as it was running perfectly fine/. All I did first was

1. Transferred documents
2. Got the brake drums cleaned.
3. Minor rust in left door which needed tinkering was taken care.
4. Got under body black painting done.
5. Body just did rubbing and its still in original paint
6. Seat covers changed as it was faded.
7. Only mechanical part which needed replacement was Gear worm as speedometer cable was not working.

Within a week all these are done except gear worm replacement, which I received last week. Here are few pics of work done.

I am looking for original master cylinder if anyone can share the source would be great.

regards,
Sudhin Karumbaiah

For the love of all things mechanical, your restoration pics are so soothing...

Even though I have no memories associated with this model, the restoration project itself has euphoric properties.

cudos to your effort and the outcome...
