If buying a car is on your New Year wishlist, rest assured that you will be spoilt for choice in 2008.
No less than 60 new cars, models and variants are expected to reach the showrooms in 2008, with something for pockets of every size. Bringing cheer to the middle class will be about 15 new models and variants in the small car segment and around 20 new models in the midsize segment.
From Tata’s Rs 1 lakh-car, to Alfa Romeo 159 and BMW X6, the new launches are bound to make choices delightfully difficult.
The luxury segment will have about 10 new models to boast of, along with 15 new SUVs.
Annual sales of passenger cars in India more than doubled in the past five years to 1.08 million in the 12 months ended March 31, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. With seven in every 1,000 people in India owning a car at present, the total may reach three million by 2015.
To accommodate all the extra vroom, dealers are cutting down on inventories and hiring salespersons to ensure that your hot wheels get to you in the comfort of your homes.
Hottest action will be seen in the compact and sub-compact segments, with prices ranging from Rs 1 lakh for the Tata’s now famous peoples’ car to the Fiat Cinquecento that comes with a price tag close to Rs 12 lakh.
While Maruti is scheduled to launch Splash, Hyundai is prepared to counter it with the automatic gearshift i10, the manual shift version of which was first launched in India. In the hatchback/mid-size segment, Fiat is lining up its Linea while Volkswagen will bring in Jetta and Renault the Sandero.

Hindustan Times brings real news or predicted news? i30 news was given by them only, that it will replace old elantra instead of new elantra 2007. Still don't know if i30 will come or new Elantra?

A article came in the paper today with the same news and there was a picture of the Fiat 500. Below it was written VW Jetta lol:

Sixty cars!. Who gave them this figure. Remember this and then tally this against the actual figures at end of 2008. See so many hyped headlines such as `50 new cars for 2004, ...2005.. 2066.., ad infinitum. Just pure speculation and hype in the media which is repeated here. Media has to fill the pages and will put up a catchy headline but on this forum, it just represents a waste of cyberspace.

You mean 10%. Anyway, I am not over-exicited by the arrival of new cars in the Indian market. I would be more excited if the infrastructure were to improve. Good roads, fewer traffic jams, better quality in everything (fuel, parts , after-sales service), etc., etc. The cars that make it to the Indian market will necessarily have to be poor cousins of the ones sold abroad beacause of the poor infrastructure in our country.

I would put a realistic tally at 15 new car launches in 08

ill bet on a number between 15 and 20.lets hope for the best and fiat hyundai and maruti will come up with minimum 3 models this year.skoda and honda will have 2 each.then tata sure to launch their small car, v3 and the new sumo.so the number would be between 15-20.

ram

If these magazines and newspapers are to believe then there would be around 300 cars in the market to choose from, since the year 2001, i have been seeing 40 new cars, then 50 new cars, and now 60, next years headlines are going to be 70 new cars and so on and so forth.
