Audi started selling their A4 far before BMW came in with the 3. As of today, the 3 sells more than the C, while the A4 has pretty much a dispensable presence in the segment. Frankly, no one cares about the A4. Not only have they had the gall to launch only the FWD variant, but the A4 also scores the least in badge value, outright power, service coverage and equipment level.

Assembling the cars here will be a good move. I dont think that they are anywhere close to actual production here though - I dont think the majority of our Indian auto ancillary manufacturers have quite caught up to the quality standards + price equation demanded by the European car guys.

But with even a CKD Assembly operation here, with some amount of localization, there will be a price benefit to buyers. Unfortunately for Diesel seekers, the new proposed Diesel tax will off-set any gains otherwise!

Hope the Q3 is priced well at launch time!! That vehicle would be a lovely one to have I think!

Once again another self expanded article by Economictimes, do read there is no mention of Q7 its only the Q3 and ET I guess chooses to add its own words in all articles like the Honda brio diesel and various others,

I'm quite sure Audi will not assemble the Q7 here as the model gets a full replacement globally in the next 6-8 months and it perhaps may from Mid 2013 start Q7 assembly with the new model and by then the sales itself will make it a lot more viable.

So for now it's just Q3,

Audi may begin manufacturing luxury cars in India to boost sales.

Audi, the Volkswagen Group owned luxury carmaker, is considering manufacturing certain models of its luxury cars in India instead of assembling them here, reflecting its confidence in the Indian luxury car market.
The models under consideration are yet-to-be-launched A3 compact car or the Q3 compact sports utility vehicles. The decision could be finalised in the next 6-12 months.


The move if implemented could make Audi cars even more attractive for the customers in terms of pricing and the economies of scale could boost the company's profitability too.

A welcome move. If they do this and hence price there vehicles more competitively, it will surely reflect in the sales too. And once it proves successful the other big players would also start thinking on similar lines. My gut feeling is that we might see them breach the 20L price barrier very soon in the near future.

I think the VW philosophy of adopting standardized componants is adding to a huge confusion in the Indian market in terms of the brand perceptions. All have seen the results of this in the Vento-Jetta-Passat positioning and the subsequent sales of these individual models. The same confusion was carried forward across the brands too with same critical componants like engines, transmission being used across Superb, Passat & A4 with completely different price points. Would probably be a good move from VW to clear these overlaps to gain momemtum and consolidate the individual brands themselves. Indian customers seems to be teaching some classic marketing & branding lessons in the present automotive wars unlished here.

Audi Q3 maybe called Audi Q3 S-the locally assembled Q3 .

The Q3 S is likely to be priced at about INR 25 lakhs (ex-showroom). Features such as the panoramic sunroof would not be seen and the Audi Quattro system would give way for a front wheel drive layout.

ince the Q3 S would be lighter than the Q3 TDI (the Q3 S would be a diesel), Audi is also believed to retune the engine accordingly to achieve higher fuel economy. Lastly the DSG automatic transmission would be replaced by a manual transmission.
