Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), one of India's fastest growing automobile manufacturer and car exporter, is planning to come out with a "public car" for developing countries.

"We are planning to come out with a public car that is suitable for India as well as other eastern countries," H S Lheem, HMIL managing director, said.

Refusing to divulge further details, he said it usually takes three years to bring out a new car. The new vehicle in the small car segment will presumably be brought out to compete with the Nano, Tata Motors' "People's Car".

HMIL markets 34 variants of passenger cars across segments. The Santro in the B segment, Getz Prime, i10 in the B+ segment, the Accent and Verna in the C segment, the Elantra in the D segment, the Sonata Embera in the E segment, and the Tucson in the SUV segment.

Lheem was speaking to newspersons at the inauguration of a new dealership of the company here Friday.

The new dealership is spread across a built-up area of 2596 sq metres and provides facilities of sales, service and spares. The showroom will also have the used car showroom Hyundai Advantage.

Lheem said: "Rajasthan is an important market for Hyundai and the opening up of the 10th dealership in Rajasthan proves our keenness to increase our presence in the state in order to meet the growing demand for Hyundai cars here.

"The state-of-the-art showroom and workshop facilities at Morani Hyundai will help HMIL provide immediate and efficient services to our valued customers in the city."

Hyundai Motor India, a wholly owned subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company, has 230 dealers and the figure is expected to go up to 300 by end of 2008.

"We are looking at a growth of around 30 per cent in this year nationally primarily on account of the launch of our new car i10," said Arvind Saxena, HMIL's senior vice-president (marketing and sales).

Everyone wants to take on the Tata Nano. Where were they all these years????

Necessity is the mother of invention, so, roads will follow. Only worry is environment.

I think they were sleeping cozy on their profits....
Tata has made India proud.
Lets hope others can follow suit and give us real VFM cars instead of plain talking.

All of a sudden every auto manufacturers has woken up. Where were they till now? But till the time these people come out with vehicle, our own Nano would have stormed the amrket and Govt will ask these people to shelve the projects as infrastructure will be a big issue.

Funny... All these guys said that Nano is impossible... Now they are joining the bandwagon...!

Tata must be smiling...

I just hope that in the rat race, if all these cars come out, our environment doesnt lose out on the already losing battleground...
Also, if so many small cars come out, we can forget being civilised, the consequences will be enormous:
1- Traffic goes up
Road space goes down

2- Patience goes down
Road Rage goes up

3- Mother Nature loses in all repects

So therefore i conclude, we can say goodbye to civilised life..

You can only imagine what will happen then, probably roads filled with mini riots.
I shudder just at the thought of it.

Well well, better late than never. First they all said that its impossible to make a 1L car, now everyone seems to be hankering for low priced cars and "Public" car is a nice twist. Am so happy that the Tata's seem to have sparked off a flurry of new models all of them aimed at the lower end of the market. This was long overdue, and will definitely reduce the cost of motoring in this country.

Used to always get bugged when you could buy an excellent used Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla in the US for abt 8-10K USD and the Indian prices were so much higher. And this when Indians had pathetically low purchasing power. Looks like the times are changing, and it wont be long before the higher end cars start becoming very affordable atleast in the used car market.

What about Maruti Suzuki?

They were very skeptical about Nano!

So now we have Hyundai, GM, Bajaj and Renault trying to build a Nano competitor.

I hope someone brings in a environment friendly competitor to Nano.

I guess that some day in the near future, you would see an electric Nano.

AFAIK, Maruti Suzuki have already said that they will not make a car smaller than the 800, nor they will slash 800 prices.

But will Hyundai be able to give a 1-lac car after 3 years? Or any manufacturer for that matter...
