So after stating the word 'impossible' to Tata's Nano and with the market speculation of Maruti actually getting M800 to fight the Nano, it seems Maruti have succumbed to Tata's engineering marvel and finally pen down the 660 CC small car for 1.5 Lakhs.

Atleast thats what TOI has to say in the link below.

Guess we are about to see everyone driving a car soon and may be saying good bye to the ricks. :D

PS - Mods I could not find a similar thread making rounds, but if it exisits kindly delete or merge this before it gets noticed.

Not to mention that parent suzuki actually masters in 600 CC + engines, so the real fight could get a bit 'technical'.

Looking at the current suzuki line up, the Cervo might well be the answer. And if it is then well this would be a smarter looking alternative.

Aha, Whacky though. Bajaj guys get a 600CC Twin. super charge it. and put it in their small car!
Loads of competition for nano with maruthi coming out, but then, i doubt how much they are gonna sell. not to mock at any one here, with all regards. just people driving around on bikes the HeroHonda CD-100, who need to take their family around would buy that car...more people if its comes out with an electric version.
Practically not every 2nd guy is going buy it, one survey said all the bike users will chuck their bikes...second had sales will drop...how? a guy wanting a Santro woundt even consider the Maruti 800!?....Pulsar guys gonna chuck their bikes for a nano?
I wont, i'd still choose the bike over taking the Ikon out.
However,It can, like the indica, take over the mini taxi segment, the auto segment that is.

Off topic here, i know.
coming back to the topic, The maruti is more likely to become the peoples car coz of the existing popularity and loyalty, I'd choose the nano though, at the least it's Indian.

Just read in today's TOI that Maruti is planning to counter Nano with a 1.5 lakh car. That should be interesting

Sorry, didnt see the other thread on the same topic.

Mods: Please merge this with the other thread

well what happened to all that Suzuki quotes..
It's impossible to the safety and emission norms Suzuki was touting about, and they cant make them meet at the Nano's price bracket.
Sure it costs more, but what 650$, roughly Rs 25K.
This should be interesting, when they make an official announcement. clap:

Maruti plans 660cc car at Approx. 1.5l OTR by early 2009.

Sorry

Mods Please delete it.

Mr Suzuki please eat you own words of having all the safety features in this car which you had questioned Mr Ratan Tata earlier prior to launch of NANO since your 1.5 lakh car will not have A/C, powersteering, airbags which you had questioned Tata about.

Suzuki MD said they will never compete with Nano or they intend to manufacture the small car. But how come the tables have changed? Is Maruti's MD is eating his own words.:Shockked: They are joining the band wagon of small car now. Suppose every auto manufacturers start manufacturing these cars then where is the space and infrastructure to accomodate these cars.:Frustrati

Oh god.Why can't these people bring down the cost of the existing cars.India companies have so much margin or they can bring down cost by having complete production here.

Why bring bike with a car jacket !

The Nano effect has had everyone from Bajaj to Hyundai to Renault to Maruti announcing their plan of 1.5 lac cars! Controlling costs with such discipline is not everyones cup of tea, though if any other manufacturer does launch cheaper cars, I'd place my bets on Maruti and Bajaj. But the cheapest will still be the Nano.

Renault and Mahindra have already portrayed their inability to control costs, even in the 5 - 6 lakh segment, with the Logan. Plus, how many CEO's would really have the commitment / resolve for a product whose margins will be wafer-thin, and may dilute the brand value? The Nano may make business sense...yes, but patriotism has surely been a driving force for the Tata team.

in my personal opinion its better to leave nano to itself in creating the four wheeler driving population.it can be a fight after that on the upgradation front that others can score were tata is not a winner till date if we dont consider the taxis.so tata is trying to take them young and others would take it from them as the customers mature.good point though ,right.
ram

Nice to see positive downstream effects of one thought leader. Its all good for the customer ultimately.

And for the roads and traffic ? :Frustrati

Maruti's 600 (or 660CC) engines make like 60 hp and are used extensively in Japan in Wagon R. They just need to a car to put that in though.

If they have such an engine, why is the 800 so bloody underpowered? there must be a reason why they dont use that.
