This has been discussed several times in the forum, and i hope atleast this time, a conclusion is reached!

So, as i understand from this thread now- Is this correct?

1. FIAT and GM own the 1.3 multijet engine. Its not a FIAT engine, but a FIAT- GM engine.
2. Suzuki has no involvement in the development of the engines.
3. As per GM- Suzuki deal, Suzuki has the right to use the multijet engines in their vehicles.
4. Suzuki does not have to pay royalty for using the engines (?)

Why not take part in some active discussion instead?

How do you manage all these things man? How about including a couple of non influential souls like yours truly for a few exclusive TD's?

Yes. They are using it for the Indica and the car was displayed at the Auto Expo along with the Dicor engine powered Indica.

I heard that later some time the Aveo U-VA as well the Aveo will come powered by the 1.3 Multijet engines. So will the SX4 sedan. I think at one point of time we'll only be left with the choice of bodies and need not worry about the powertrain.

Dude ram now works for Maruti Suzuki India. He used to work for Hyundai India.

As for the info i think there are a lot of threads where this has been discussed and i totally agree with some points by Ram and CrAzY dRiVeR.

Sorry for going OT:
The current Indica or the new Indica X1? Will the current Indica be offered with the 1.3? If so, that would be an awesome deal!

If i'm not wrong GM wasn't involved in the design of the JTD,MJD engines, they were developed by Fiat with the help of Bosch.GM got rights to the JTD engine as a settlement of the failed merger,so that diesel engines could be guaranteed for its other brands in Europe like Opel.

So basically MJD,JTD is developed by Fiat owned by Fiat/GM.

Not quite. The engines were developed by FIAT-GM Powertrain BV, a company based in the Netherlands with its manufacturing unit in Poland - together with Bosch.

GM did not get the rights as a 'settlement' - both parties owned the company that developed these engines and therefore both of them retained the right to manufacture it.

Its a bit like shared parental rights to a child after a divorce.

ok i'm wrong then,so the devlopment took place after the merger.

edit:after some googling,i came up with this

Quote:
Modern common rail systems, whilst working on the same principle, are governed by an engine control unit (ECU) which opens each injector electronically rather than mechanically. This was extensively prototyped in the 1990s, with collaboration between Magneti Marelli, Centro Ricerche Fiat and Elasis. After research and development by the Fiat Group, the design was acquired by the German company Robert Bosch GmbH for completion of development and making suitable for mass-production. In 1997 they extended its use for passenger cars. The first passenger car that used the common rail system was the 1997 model Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD and later on that same year Mercedes-Benz E 320 CDI.
The Fiat GM deal took place in 2000,but the JTD was developed in 1997,so how did GM co-develop this with Fiat? Maybe GM co-owns the design of the second generation JTD which is also called as the Multijet or MJD.So whatever the new developments by fiat in the third generation will be for use by Fiat only.

Common- rail technology was developed by FIAT and first came in the Alfa romeo. However, FIAT did not cash in on it, and sold it off to Bosch. However, we are not talking of common- rails in general here.

Interestingly, Wikipedia mentions this in bold. I'm not sure of the truth in it.

Nice find!

The editing was done on 12th Feb, at 4:16 pm as per wikipedia. Thats when discussion was going on in this thread. So, chances are high it is someone from this forum itself.

EDIT: Even more interstingly, a post made at 4:20 in this thread citing the same wikipedia article does not have that line!
