There's a article on rediff (reproduced from cardekho.com) on Cervo. Price tag put at Rs 1.5 lakhs and intended to compete with Nano. Launch in May, June 2010 !!
Any truth in this ?

could be true looking at the approx 650 cc engines on both the cars. But interesting to notice that the cervo seems to have more punch with 55 bhp but the nano managing a measly 35bhp approx. If this is going to be priced head-on with the nano then things are defenitely going to get interesting in this new segment.

But isn't that from a VVT engine? I could be wrong.
I doubt if MUL will bring a VVT in this segment.
Also surprising is that MSIL did not showcase cervo in the autoshow even though they "plan" to launch it this year.
In any case, this would be a good replacement for my 10yr old M800

I'm not too sure about this. I don't think they can price the Cervo at 1.5 lakh and sell it at a profit. IMO, the Alto would go under the knife, the F8D being replaced with this 660cc motor and be priced at 1.5 lakh. Somehow I find it very difficult to believe that they are going to sell the Cervo at 1.5 - 2 lakh. If they do, I am game.

It wont be feasible for Suzuki to manufacture the Cervo at nano's price level. The Cervo could very well be an Alto replacement, as there is a high chance of Alto getting the 660cc engine albeit with a bit of reduction in the power output.

I just read the rediff article and I am shocked to see the price of the car. 1.5 -2 lakh. This can't be possible for this vehicle. Even if they come up with no frill version (like 800 basic) then also it will touch 2.2 -2.3 lakh. Tata nano top version (with PS + PW) comes at 1.85 L and will still hold the edge.

I am still shocked at price and the launch date (this summer). Anyone has any confirmation on these or any insight information?

I doubt the price range.

I doubt the price range too. The basic version may be for 1.5 but topend will be greater than 2 lakhs.

This price point for Cervo looks very unlikely and speculative. Look at the amount of cost cutting, R&D and adjustments TATA Nano had to make to hit the 1L price mark. Suzuki simply cannot do that just by reducing engine capacity. There is more to it than this.

The engine power need not reduce from the current Alto's 45 bhp. That comes from a 25 year old engine. We already have 660 cc 55 -60 bhp motors in Japan. Minus the VVT and Indian fuel quality, we could get somewhere in the region of 50 bhp from new gen 660 cc motors. Forget the Nano's petrol engine. Tatas are not known to make good petrol engines. They are on the learning curve. With Suzuki, its a different ball game alltogether. They are the masters of small cars. Still, a Cervo minus all the bells and whistles at 1.5 lakh seems to be a bit streched although an Alto at that price point with a 660 cc motor is very likely.
