Some good news, Its going to be launched in OCT 08, Here is the article

Pune, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has just completed a programme to ramp up capacity at its fourth and newest plant at Manesar. By the end of March, the company will be able to roll out 1.7 lakh units per annum from this facility, up 70 per cent from the installed capacity.

The enhanced production capacity will also be used to roll out DZire, the sedan version of the Swift, that is due to be launched later this month.

The plant, which attained full capacity within weeks of its commissioning in Feb 2007, is currently manufacturing at 120 per cent of its installed capacity and rolls out the Swift (both diesel and petrol variants) and the SX4 sedan. With the enhanced capacity, the waiting period for the Swift, which is two to three months will come down, a statement said.

The capacity expansion at Manesar is also timed for Suzuki?s fifth world strategic model, A-Star, that will be rolled out in October this year. By January 2009, exports of this model will take off. By 2010, Maruti Suzuki aims to increase capacity to 3,00,000 cars at this plant.

The capacity hike is not enough justification for the launch of a new model.there are other models which have a huge waiting period which has to sorted out soon.Dzire launch is also scheduled and the production of the model has to be taken care of.

Maruti would much rather dedicate the increased capacity for the export market A-Star than making delivery times shorter.

I'm willing to bet you'll see major major expansion for Maruti in the next few months to accomodate the whole list of products they're about to launch. A great time for Maruti indeed!

Yes the news is confirmed that A-STAR would be produced and launched in india by oct 08.Maybe looking at the delays in launches from maruti this could go up to nov or jan 09.But the car would be a lot different from the model shown, for example -reverse cam instead of mirror, huge alloy wheels etc.One interesting point is that its sized almost close to swift .

Does this mean MSIL will have three cars in the same segment by the end of this year - Swift, Splash and A-Star?

Though the size of these cars are the same , I am sure A-star pricing will be totally different and the target segement will also be different. IF is not a VFM , that is for sure.I saw this concept car in tokyo motor show, it is way above what maruti has produced so far.:-)

Ram, this is really confusing. Splash was supposed to be an alternative to the Swift, priced lesser than the Swift and more than a WagonR. Fine. But if A-Star is sized close to the Swift, it is too big to replace the Alto or even the WagonR. Does this mean, after the launch of Splash, sooner or later, there will be three cars in the same segment, i.e, Swift, Splash and A-Star? I'm really confused.

Splash launch is delayed,so cant say 3 cars in the same segment.Have a hunch feeling that a-star would be a premium product,
