i10: 50,000 export orders in just 3 months!

NEW DELHI: Car major Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) on Tuesday said it has received 60,000 export orders for its small car 'i10', which was launched in October 2007.

"HMIL started accepting export orders for the i10 from December, 2007, and received 60,000 orders from the overseas market creating a record of clocking the fastest 50,000 units of export orders in just three months," the company said in a statement.

The company would ship around 26,000 units by March 2008, and subsequently it would be exported to all the major markets across the globe covering over 90 countries by the end of the year, it added.

The small car 'i10', manufactured at the Chennai plant, made its debut in Europe at the Bologna Motor Show, Italy, in December last year and was also displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in January 2008.

Keeping its export market expansion plans, HMIL has also started a training programme to train staff of all its overseas distributors in Chennai factory premises.

The first batch of 31 sales managers from about 21 countries, like Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia, would undergo the training programme from March 11-14, it said.

Hyundai is already exporting 10000 units per month of Santro/Getz. They are the largest exporter from India. So, 50000 or whatever is not eye popping.

Certainly not eye popping, vasudeva.

But i10 is the first car to make its international debut in India and get exported in such large numbers. I admire Hyundai for making India as the sole manufacturing hub for this car.

For auto industry, I am sure this will set a bench mark in future.

Of course, Hyundai has to be commended for being the largest exporter accounting for 65% of India's car exports. It exports 40% of its production. At least it makes a product that can be exported.

Been reading reviews of the i10 in the Uk.

While it is not as charismatic as a Panda, it is a well priced package and seen to be well made

When hyundai is having one of their biggest manufacturing facility in india and when other facilities are busy churning out the bigger models india is the best place to kick start a small car.

THIS is why Hyundai is not promoting Getz Diesel. They are almost sure, with their pricing, it is not going to generate numbers, so the whole capacity is dedicated to the volume sellers. Makes business sense for them.

The assembly line boys probably make a Getz or two when they are bored of making so many i10's/santros.

Not surprising. Hyundai was the first car manufacture to reach 1 million (10 million?) car export within the shortest time from the day they started operation in Chennai.
OT. I heard that the complete 2nd unit of Hyundai is controlled by robotics. Is it correct?
