I am trying to find out some of the fastest sedans/hatches made/sold in India. I don't really mean "top speed" figures, as many cars are not capable of maintaining those speeds for long. I also don't mean the ones which are heavily modded for off-road purposes like rallies, races etc, even though normal street-legal mods are fine. Of course, we can exclude the sports cars/coupes, fully imported cars etc.

While traveling on highways, I have found the following cars, seemingly and maintain speeds higher than 150 kmph(~100mph).

1. Skoda RS
2. Corolla
3. Ford Fiesta (not sure if these are occasional blips)
4. Mercedes (D-class? remember seeing some old-time politicians "low-flying" on roads in Kerala)

I am sure Beemers, Audis etc are capable, but not seen many to judge.

PS. I know this "street-legal" thingie on Indian roads is a thorny issue as many of us do break the rules related to permitted mods, max speeds etc frequently :)

most of the bmws, audis, mercs and the porsche cayenne would do it with relative ease. most of the cars above 25l can do it.

edit - whoops didnt see the part about excluding fully imported cars. but i guess still the bmw 3 and 5 series and the audi a6 can be included since they are built here.

I think (based on my really limited memory from what I've seen/read) amongst the most rallied are the Esteems and Gypsies (earlier) and Balenos, and sometimes the OHC (in most recent times).

Oh a highway cruiser, haha i got one Elantra CRDi.
List:
1. Hyundai - Elantra CRDi or Petrol, Sonata CRDi or Petrol, Terracan, seen Azera too on the highway.
2. Skoda - RS, Octavia, Laura, Superb.
3. Toyota - Camry, Land Cruiser
4. Honda - Civic, CRV, Accord
5. Mercs - I think all of them available in India.
6. Audi - Same
7. BMW - Same

Mentioned cars have good cruising capabilities on highways.

Its more of the Torquey diesels i feel which are really quick on the highways ... the likes of octavias , innovas etc.

try beating my optra magnum from 0 to 150kmp the skoda rs will but dont know about the other cars

let me add to this

the fastest street legal sedan. the bentley conti flying spur.:uncontrol

Driving speed is a very relative term. When i'm driving the Wagon R, everybody seems to go faster than normal but when i'm in the VTEC, the world just slows down a bit. LOL

This thread is for maintaining the speeds too. Handling also counts. :)

As someone said Torquish Diesel have upper hand over petrols. ;)

The BMW 525d and 530i are the fastest Indian assembeled cars. 0 to 100km/hr in 7.5 seconds.

The Amberoid with the V10??

I think it makes more sense to categorize the cars according to the segment they belong. This way, A BMW 525 will not step onto the territory of an Accent CRDi.

Any 100bhp+ car can maintain 150kmph easy unless it has aerodynamic or stability issues. I cruise at 150 all the time in my cedia with no hint of understeer. I can hold that speed easily without antics like cutting lanes and stuff. In a poor handling car like a optra magnum or verna or corolla, I doubt if its so easy to turn in without understeering off one's lane. I'm sure 150 shouldn't be a problem in the skoda rs or fiesta as they handle pretty well at high speeds. I've seen bottle drive his palio at sustained speeds over 150 without any issues as well.

I'd not bring the bimmers or such into the picture as they are in a completely different league.

what makes you say the magnum has poor handling at high speed almost all the auto mags that reviewed it had reached 190 kmp and had no problems about the handling

Handling is very important to maintain high speeds on the highway.

Of the cars I have driven on highway, the best was Lancer.
