Maruti Alto 1.1L VX discontinued. Edit: Should it be relaunched?

Folks,

I was just browsing Maruti's website and at this page :

http://marutialto.com/variants.asp

I could not find any mention of the 1.1L engine version of the Alto (I think it used to be called the Alto VX). Has it been discontinued? Why?

its been a long time since maruti stopped production of the alto VX.

the VX was not selling much and was eating into the sales of the LX and the wagon r with the same engine.

John

The 1.1 Alto hasbeen discontinued for quite some time now. Its no longer available. The Alto 800cc LXi is the only other model available apart from the LX

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be a good idea for Maruti to bring back the Alto VXi? Someone had said, the main reason for discontinuing this car was that it was eating into the Zen's market share. Considering the fact that the new Zen is more of a rounded Wagon R (far from sporty) and Maruti's sporty hatch, the Swift is in a different segment, the Alto VXi could fill the vacuum left by the earstwhile Zen. 1.1L, 60 odd bhp, low centre of gravity... why not bring it back?

@Aditya
That would be really great if Maruti would do that, butttt dont think they would put both their Zen Estilo and WagonR on potential risk.
Moreover the engine in Alto 1.1 was the same as in the WagonR (IIRC). Now this engine again is powering the Estilo. If they again launch it in the Alto 1.1, it would NOT look a good business proposition..

They should have rather brought in the Alto 1.1 as the new Zen. That would have been awesome. The new Estilo is really not a great looker (even the new WagonR fares wayy better), nor is sporty as the erstwhile 1.1. For me, this was a completely foolish, pathetic, and uncalled for car...

It makes sense to bring back the Alto VX 1.1L now since the zen is no longer in production & the present zen is in a world of its own.

Never said that. I'm talking about the Alto VXi. Note the fullstop after "Zen".

The Zens engine, I think, can still be used somewhere. Its an ACE unit vs the Cast Iron block of the 1.1. Alto 1.1 was killed because it was actually eating 2 cars the Zen as well as the Wagon R. Its still applicable for the Wagon R and the Estilo. But why not try a different flavour, Alto with Zen engine. Or better still Beefed up Maruti 800 with Zen engine (yes this can be done and will not be as ghastly in terms of braking and structural rigidity as Maruti 800 with an Esteem engine which some people have already done privately).
