I remember filling fuel at ~ 7.50/litre around 85-87.

My dad owned a 1966 czesh make Jawa and he used to fill 5 litres of petrol + 2 T oil for less than 5 rupees then --> 5 litres of Petrol + 250 ml 2 T oil for less than Rs. 5

All those who go ooh and aah over the absurdly low price of petrol 30 years ago would be well-advised to be reminded of what salaries were like in those days. My uncle, an MBBS doctor with a modest practice in a small town, had a monthly income of around 3000 rupees in the late 70s (I just asked him). So I imagine he'd certainly have felt the pinch in running his old Premier Padmini even if petrol cost only Rs 5 a litre! This would have been the case with most middle-class salaried professionals who owned cars in those days.

I remember in 1988 petrol was around 9 or 10 rupees a liter and i had just finished my 10th standard so 5 of us would go for a short drive and we used to chip in 1 or 2 rupees each and fill up .5 or 1 liter switch of the engine on sloping roads ya those were the days,no computers or internet no cable tv

Edsel Rulez: you done what no one else has which is put the whole thing in context. It's all relative, so salaries is a good thing to peg it to.

Your Doc uncle would have been a rich man in his time, as 3000Rs went a long way in them days. I can remember accompanying my uncle to the HM dealer in Calcutta in 1976 and watching him hand over a Demand Draft for Rs 33,000/- to purchase a brand new '****-brown' Ambassador Mark III. One couldn't get a 100cc motorcycle for that sum today.

OK,hold your breath, friends.
I remember 1966-I was 8, and my dad had a black Hillman Minx. On weekend trips to Lonavla and Mahabaleshwar, I remember he would top up @ 84 paise per liter-thats right, 84 paise.
Thats when a US dollar got you Rs 4.
Cheers!

Now..!! Pity, 1500Rs tank full every two weeks (car) , still i have to use bike when possible to avoid that damn 3rd time in a month fill

Earliest memory of price of petrol was Rupees six per litre approx. Had an account at a petrol pump for all our cars.

this is during 1983 onwards.

The cheapest I have bought petrol for is Rs 24 around 1999 when I had a LML Select scooter (which i just sold off in scrap last week for 1500 bucks ).
Remember filling more than 4 litres for 100 bucks.. and that petrol would last me full month.. since i didnt use the scooter much.

The range that I recollect seems to be Rs30 per Litre. Standard filling pattern in my Kinetic used to be for Rs 100, 3.33L.
