My father's log book for his 60s / 70s Padmini (he had 2, I remember him telling me) has petrol prices for less than a rupee.
The earliest accurate figure I remember is 8.98 (don't remember if it was Bangalore or Chennai, though). It was 10 for a long time and in my first year of college, 11.12. Remember arguing with a bunk guy to fill 1.08l for Rs 12 (he wanted to fill 1.07l).

In June 2003, petrol in Chennai cost 33.11. Diesel costs that much now!

Petrol was around Rs.8.75, while Diesel was around Rs.3.25, If I remember well, its in 1985. My Dad had a Lambretta, and then a Kinetic Spark. (We recenty sold SPARK for Rs. 1500/- :-), it was in running condition until we sold it out.)

The earliest I remember filling petrol was somewhere in 1972 in my uncle's Morris Minor (MRW6113) at one rupee and some paise per litre. I used to fill my 1984 model Ind Suzuki's tank with 93 Octane from National Garage for Rs 80/-. Today it costs more than Rs 500/-.

but read this - my father has told me that when he bought his first Austin - he filled petrol at - his exact words are - "BARA AANE GALLON - 75 paise for 5 litres". Mind blowing isn't it ? If it happens today, I will take a bath in petrol. I will fit twin Solex carburettors in all my Fiats.

Best regards,

I too remember paying Rs. 12 for a liter of Petrol. I distinctly remember this was the time when Bisleri had just started selling packaged drinking water for Rs. 10/-

Our elders used to joke that someday Water would be more expensive than fuel. and guess what today, a bottle of Qua mineral water costs Rs. 40 per liter while Diesel fill up in my car is @ Rs. 33.60 per liter.

Rs 8.00 per litre when I bought by first Ind-Suzuki.

The lowest I remember is about Rs 3.50 when I was a small kid. A neighbor who owned a Bullet was cribbing to my father as the rates had just been revised. Revised from what, I don't remember!

Ironically, its now - diesel rates have only fallen in the last few years since I bought my car, and it makes even more glad that i didnt buy a wagon R duo. Costs me less than 34 rupees per litre

BTW, Bisleri is still around RS 12/- per litre. Of course one can compare the price of Evian mineral water, imported, but the commonly available water has not really risen in price.

When I learnt to drive, 1973, the price of petrol was around Rs 3 a litre. It had risen from around Rs 1.25 because of the Arab-Israel war and OPEC's cartelisation at that time, I remember my father saying that pretty soon he would not be able to afford keeping a car!
