Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you pai

Does anybody has an excel sheet indicating the petrol prices in India across the last few years? I want to compare that with the global crude prices at same period and see how they fare.

PS. I found some info on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histori...rices_in_India

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

Reviving an old thread. I remember petrol at less than a rupee a litre. In 1967 or thereabouts and certainly in 1968 it was Rs 0.98 a litre. That year it became 1.00 a litre. In real purchasing power that is like petrol at ~Rs 40 a litre today. This is to say in real terms fuel is about twice as expensive to day compared to the pre-1973 oil price crises. In 1990 when I bought my first car, a Padmini, the price was ~Rs 10 per litre which adjusted for inflation is around Rs 79 today!! i.e. in real terms it is no more costlier today than it was in 1990.

IIRC, the first oil shock saw the price overnight increasing to Rs 1.67/ litre.

Trip down memory lane - what sort of dispensers does one remember?

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

As a kid in the 1970’s, I remember prices like Rs 3.5 per litre and stuff.
As a young teen in the mid 1980’s I remember paying prices like 10 Rupees for Petrol + 2T oil mix, (for illegal and borrowed rides) on my friend’s “Explorer”, “Silver Plus”, TVS50, Peugeot Sportif etc.
As an older teen in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I remember borrowing occasionally from friends - RX100, KB100, IND SUZUKI rides and paying approx. 15 Rupees a litre.
My friend’s very expensive modified High Torque RD350 with diffusers and all, used to give only 9-10kms per lire and most of the time, we weren’t able to use it because it was just too heavy on the pocket for us.

From there on, it has just been a seriously upward journey, in terms of Fuel prices.

For a long time (even upto and including recent times, upto say 2014, we were generally preferring to use our Diesel vehicles much more, if we had a lot of running to do, because it was, quite frankly, just so much cheaper, being a subsidised fuel.

Similar story. 3.50 for a litre with 25ml oil for dad's Lambretta. 7.50 when I got my moped, a Luna Super in 1990, 12.00 for my Hero Honda CD100 SS in 1992.

As a kid, used to smuggle my uncle's TVS along with my cousin in the village, buy 500ml of petrol/oil mix that was sold in bottles. Nearest petrol bunk was probably 30 kms away. We would pedal, push and ride the thing till it went empty again.

The Luna had an approx mileage of 65 kmpl, while the Honda was amazing at 95 kmpl. It still sits at my friend's place, fully redone. He says he never really remembers when he filled it. Truly, fill it, shut it, forget it.

I remember Rs. 0.65 when I just entered college in 1969. It soon went up to around Rs.1.25. Then in 1983 when I drove to Bombay from Delhi it was Rs.5.24 in Delhi and Rs. 4.99 in Bombay.

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

My first car was Maruti 800 bought in the year 2001. The very first fill I paid was Rs.28.71 per litre. That was the lowest I remember until now. As a kid, my father's Ambassador car was always company paid and maintained and I have never really thought about the fuel or service costs.

I am definitely the youngest one here, my freshest memory of the cheapest price of Petrol was in 2006, when my family moved to India, my father used to fill petrol in our Toyota Innova for about 45rs a litre.

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

I started riding scooter in 1996. Petrol prices were Rs 16/Ltr.
I fondly remember telling the guy at petrol pump to fill for Rs 10. We friends used to pool in the money to fill the petrol for Rs 10 and ride to tution classes.

What's the lowest you ever paid for fuel?

A friend mentioned that the price of petrol breached the historical Rs.90/L mark in Chennai.

I wondered what's the lowest I've ever paid. I remember that I paid ~Rs.30 for what used to be called Petrol 1:1 in 1998. I don't know how many remember the days when we filled two-stroke petrol engines with petrol and oil together. So I think the petrol costed ~Rs.27/L.

I've even topped up fuel for as little as Rs.10 when the pocket money was too tight.

What's the lowest you have paid for petrol or diesel?

It's amusing that once upon a time that the below two notes fetched a liter a petrol. Feel old yet?

I must have mentioned it before. The lowest I paid was around 65 paise way back in 1969 when I bough my Jawa. Sadly it increased to a rupee within six months.

Then way back in 1983 when I did a Delhi-Mumbai trip by road, I paid Rs.5.25 in Delhi and Rs.4.99 in Mumbai.

In the 1980's 10 rs could get you a dollar. So maybe it was not that cheap.

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

My Shogun was gifted by Dad back in mid 1995. Then with Rs.100 I used to fill 5 liters and few coins were returned. IIRC the price was Rs.19.10/-

When I got my Beat back in May 2010 the price was Rs. 47.93/-

Cheers!

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you paid

My first remembrance of fuel price is my vision of the fuel pump on a Saturday evening when we started our travel on a Matador van, sometime in 1987-88. Petrol was Rs.7.20 and Diesel of 3.75(not sure about the exact numbers).

About the turn of millennium it was in the range Rs.20 for quite some time. We use to fill for Rs.10. Rs.50 to Rs 60 in late 2000s for a long time.
