Got this mail from Hyundai the other day. Was not feeling well for the last couple of days. When I read this, I got worse

Media joins the drive for better fuel average
Hyundai Verna returns an unbelievable 42.4kpl

Hyundai Motor India, India’s largest passenger car exporter and the second largest car manufacturer in India organized a Mileage Challenge Rally 2008 exclusively for the Indian automobile media. This was the first time such an event had been organized by any manufacturer for the members of the motoring media. The event was flagged from the Heritage Village in Manesar on the outskirts of Delhi on the morning of 24th April, 2008.

The Mileage Challenge Rally that witnessed a total participation of 30 journalists from Delhi, Mumbai and Pune was organized to promote fuel efficient driving techniques and also an opportunity to find out what Hyundai cars are capable of. Culminating in a competitive drive, using Hyundai Verna (diesel and petrol) models, participants were ranked not for speed, but for getting the most mileage per litre of fuel from their vehicles. The average overall mileage that the Verna diesel variant yielded was 33.57 km. per litre (kpl), while the petrol model came up with an impressive average of 25.88 kpl. The overall mileage was the average of all the cars in each category.
Driving a Hyundai Verna diesel model, Bob Rupani and Nekzad Engineer of Auto India emerged the winners of this category achieving a mileage of 42.46 kpl while Manish Sarser and Ashley Baxter of Autocar India pulled off 40.5 kmpl for the first runner-up position and the team of Amit Chhangani and Rohit Paradkar from Car India clocked a mileage of 39.5 kpl to be declared the second runner- up for this category.
The teams driving the Hyundai Verna petrol variant had Dileep Desai and Vikram Gour of Zigwheels.com (of The Times of India Group) attain a mileage of 30.1 kmpl to win this category while veteran journalists Bijoy Y Kumar and Srinivas Krishnan of Business Standard Motoring accomplished 28.04 kmpl to finish second and Ashish Jha of Carwale.com and Suresh Narayan of Auto Bild India, together attained an average of 27.4 kmpl to finish in the third position.

Driving the Verna diesel and petrol models, the 30 participating journalists comprising of both print and TV drove almost 120 kms from Manesar on NH-08 towards Jaipur and back. Each publication had formed a team of two members to compete in this event and before the event started they were all briefed on the techniques of fuel efficient driving.

Expressing his appreciation of the media-persons’ sporting willingness to be part of a challenge rally, Arvind Saxena, Sr. Vice President, Hyundai Motor India, said: “It’s not often that we get the journalists to participate in such challenging events. The participants were already well-informed about how to get the most from the vehicles and the competitive environment brought the best out of each one of them. Most of the participating journalists even switched off their air conditioners in the sweltering heat of Delhi to get the maximum mileage out of their cars, and it was really nice to see their enthusiasm for the event.”

that's more average than my P150

I was driving down a H.Verna diesel on Mum-Lonavala in Feb'08,i remember it was giving me an average of about 9-10.5kmpl,but the speed was awesome.

Absolute rubbish. I fail to understand what relevance this has to real world driving conditions. But then, Hyundai had to better Fords recent 34 kpl number!

Expect the magazines to go ballistic over this news.

My santro returned 70 kmpl. And my M800 used to return 100 kmpl.

Verna's average is poor in comparison.

nice fun to end the day, pity - wish my Mamaji gets 25 in his petrol. daily use from Mulund to Nariman Point and back gives anything from 7 Worst to 9.5-10 BEST!!!

Didn't they try this earlier in 2007 too? I think that time, they didn't get much attention from the media then.

As somebody had told then, it would be good if somebody explains in detail how the whole procedure is carried out. I'm sure there'll be some unanswered questions as usual.

What do companies and media expect us to believe from all this?

Obviously, they know we dont believe in them.. But imagine what a full page ad in a national newspaper can do to improve their sales numbers.
