From the Maruti stable, the cars in their promos run add-on bodykits. The Estilo for one had them on the promos, the swift had the bodykits for a few print ads and almost every SX-4 in the ads has the maruti bodykit on it.

Advt. Vs Reality
Advertising Vs Reality - A Product Comparison Project | Funtasticus.com Humor & Fun Blog

This is true for a lot of products. I was watching a program on NDTV Good Times about an ad shoot. They were shooting a picture of a bowl filled with noodles. They also described how the 'look' of the product can be enhanced by controlling the lighting.
All ads are teasers; one should not be heavily influenced by them into wrong buying decisions. Especially in matters like buying cars.
Remember the Sprite ad 'Logon to paise do; kuch bhi bol dalthe hein'

The latest Fiesta ads in print are a blatant example of this, the ones with the references to the City, the car looks way too wide compared to reality, even taking into consideration advertising liberties this particular image is downright misleading and is obvious its been intentionally made to look that way to misrepresent its size.

Dont remember the print advt, but as compared to the TV advt, the Linea actually looks bigger in flesh. (Sometimes one needs to see a product to appreciate it and can actually be pleasantly surprised.

The Fiesta & City both look/seem bigger in the advts and on the web than on the road.

As regards the Indigo XL advt, it was clearly a case of artistic freedom, the interior visual in the advt was clearly graphical.

Widening is quite normal. Remember when you first saw a car from above - may be Mumbaikars cannot. It looked impossibly narrow if you have been only viewing from lower perspectives.

We all know that adverts are bull --- but we are also all influenced by them!

Whilst all adverts obviously seek to show a product at its best, if they misrepresent, then that should be controlled by law.

Does India have such laws? Is there any regulation of advertising in practice?

Yes, there is a self-regulatory body of advertisers called ASCI.
ASCI | How to Complain

Not only competing brands even the consumer can complain against an offending ad. Many ads which had false claims or offence to some particular community have been reported and taken off air.

We all know all ads are hyped and unrealistic. Ok, show your cars as flying ( like some bike ads ) for all we care. But please do not tamper with the dimensions. They shouldn't make a car appear wider, lower and longer than it actually is. This is very very misleading and it takes the car up several notches up in appearance than it actually is. It completely alters its stance. No wonder we are disappointed when we see these cars on road deviod of all that sheen.

look at it this way. in ads models get make up and photoshopping done to look perfect. the same way cars also get photoshopped to look better. not only looks wise but if u see car and bike ads - the sound of the engine is changed too. to make it seem sporty and so on. while most indian bikes sound like lunas - in ads they sound great!

take everything with a pinch of salt mate..
