Well PSU oil companies enjoy the benefit of Central Govt. subsidies while, private players such as Shell do not.

Thats one reason why the mighty reliance had to shut down their operations.

Also, may be the either the shell attendant was trying to be modest or he was ignorant, generally Shell diesel is purely diesel where as PSU diesel is mostly Diesel+kerosene.

and oh..by the way, Shell fuel (petrol/diesel) was priced equal to PSU fuel when the crude prices were around $ 40-45 per barrel.

Regards,

Very simple. Private operators like shell base their retail price on the crude prices. As Pranava has said, PUSs enjoy tax payers money as subsidies.

In Bangalore, I fuel at the Shell bunk and the diesel here costs the same as the other brands. Its 37.xx here and the IOC and BP are about 10 paise lower... thats the only difference...

The quality of Shell fuel is definitely much better than normal. I didnt believe the difference was vast until I filled it in my dad's NHC Vtec just before leaving on a long drive to Mysore. That was when I realised the huge difference.

As much as possible, I will fill shell only now. Unless the price difference becomes too big.

+1 to what Nikhil has said.

I generally fill up at Shell while in Bangalore. On a recent drive to my place in Maharashtra my 2003 Accent returned a fuel economy of around 15.5 km/lit on highway and I have seen similar mileage returned on my other long drives. Filling at other pumps has given me around 12 km/lit.

The private firms have less (or none) adulteration and under measurement, hence the feeling they are better. afaik Shell buys its petrol and diesel from PSUs or Mangalore refinery. So the qualitative difference (there definitely are) has to be due to what happens afterwards.

Yes I think the subsidies to PSUs are the main reason. In Hyderabad, Shell petrol costs about Rs.1.9 more per litre than PSU petrol. Don't know about diesel.

I think the quality is definitely consistently good and another advantage with Shell is that I almost never have to wait in line. Probably because there are four PSU pumps in a radius of about 1.5 km from the Shell pump.

I think it is worth it for the petrol, time saved and the windshield wipe!

I too have seen Shell returns a better average in my CRDI and I am happy to travel the extra 3 kms to get a tank full of Shell every 2 weeks. As told by Vista PSU diesel is expensive in Bangalore compared to other states and Shell comes at a negligible difference. Earlier when oil barrel price was rock bottom shell I remember had a lower price for diesel than PSUs

Simple really, SHELL buys from our PSU oil companies. They do not (or cannot) crude/fuel.

My biggest qualm- why is Shell Diesel close to 5 buck higher in Chennai, when the difference is 0.15 bucks in Bangalore

Word. I wouldn't mind paying a few rupees extra for better fuel. Luckily, a pump owner next to my house is honest enough and doesn't cheat people in the usual ways, so I'm happy. Engine doesn't knock even at 7000 rpm, so it's all good. Would still like to fill up at Shell and see what more they offer.

I have been regurlarly filling up at Shell for the last 6 months now and thankfully I have not had to loose my temper even a single time since.
Else till then in almost every petrol bunk in Bangalore I had to get into arguements as they keep trying to con by their usual techniques such as diversion of attention and speed jumping the meter within no time or the regular fill 200 when you say 1000 and then try to re-adjust to only 800 overall and lot many tricks
