Fuel prices in US varies a lot between states, locations & companies. It ranges from $2.7 to $3.8 depending on where you gas up. And within a city it is common to see price variation of up to $0.40 between pumps for same grade of gas.

In India, the actual price of petrol is somewhere near Rs30 per liter. Rest all are taxes and duties which gets added up. See one slightly older calculation below.

Basic Price: Rs 28.93 (this is the "free" part, rest all gets added up proportional to change in this price)
Excise duty: Rs 14.35
Education Tax: Rs 0.43
Dealer commission: Rs 1.05
VAT: Rs 5.5
Crude Oil Custom duty: Rs 1.1
Petrol Custom: Rs 1.54
Transportation Charge: Rs 6.00
Total price: Rs 58.90

Some good news for those Living in delhi

Source - Diesel to cost less in Delhi from July 20 - Delhi - City - The Times of India
Quote:
NEW DELHI: Diesel is likely to get cheaper by Rs.2.37 per litre in the capital as the Delhi government on Friday announced a decrease in the value added tax (VAT) on the fuel from July 20.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said while announcing the decision: "We have decided to decrease the VAT on diesel from 20% to 12.5% from July 20. This is likely to bring down the prices of the fuel in the capital."

The Delhi government had increased the VAT on diesel in March from 12.5% to 20% to meet the increased expenditure on infrastructural projects related to Commonwealth Games 2010.

Diesel costs Rs.40.10 per litre in the capital and after the decrease in VAT, it will cost Rs.37.73 per litre.

"It was necessary to reduce the VAT on diesel as petrol pump owners were facing losses," Dikshit said.

Petrol pump associations were protesting against the increased VAT since March, saying vehicle owners get diesel filled from neighbouring states as Delhi had the highest VAT on diesel.

Its been 58.95 for a while now. I think about a week.

Yes, Shell have been raising and reducing the prices depending on the market price. I wonder if we will have similar boards on other OMC bunks too.

Thats right. Shell petrol price is 58.95. I have seen this price in Banshankari as well. Now the difference is small. But even before this small difference i preferred Shell.

I wonder how Essar and Reliance still manage to sell Diesel at what the PSU is selling - When I drove into an Essar during a recent highway run, it was 40.xx for Diesel, close to the PSU rates...

Shell Bangalore Diesel prices?

Any one filled Diesel at Shell Recently?
Last time it was still 5.7 Rs more than other places
Shell price Rs.47.95 ( in 1st Week of August )
Other places Rs.42.21 ( in 1st Week of August )
Why cant shell reduce price on Diesel when petrol price at shell is hardly a Rupee more than other places.
