INR 69.00 should be about USD 1.50. I think this would be more or less the equivalent of a rupee and a half for an American, may be slightly more? So the Govt comparing prices of fuel on Dollar terms is meaningless.
On PPP terms, it should be more like Rs 15 for an American.

How many times PSU "decreased" price of petrol after hiking it?

So, its nothing shady. Its their business. Or may be pressure from PSUs, who knows. IT can happen only in India!

PPP comparison isnot very apt for this item. If both the countries buy from international market and consume, then why would ppp matter. Lets take the case of cars. Certain cars are imported both in US & in INdia - from Japan. But their prices in actual terms are more here than US - again due the taxes in their respective countries.

You can try and pick another country with similar PPP as ours and you'll find that gasoline would be different. It might even be more than ours ( there are lot of such countries)
THe point i am trying to make is very simple, the taxation levels vary across the countries and in our case is a primary contributor.

Whether thats a good thing or not is not for me to decide. I am simply making comparisons and saying that - Tax is more than subsidy; govt. earns the most in case of any hike.

Is there a rational behind this high taxation - i dont know. Neither has govt. tried to explain this in black & white.

Because the trading of petroleum is forcibly pegged to Dollars, that is why. A main reason Iraq was invaded was because Saddam threatened to sell oil for other currencies, including INR. Now Iran is threatening to open an oil bourse and trade in any currency but Dollars, so expect to find a lot of WMD there as well in future!

BTW tanked up on Shell Super @ Rs 71.55 yesterday. Shell normal retails for Rs 69.05.

What!?!
Gees, if the rates above are 'post production at the point of manufacture', then surely the oil companies who are selling the fuel have their margins added in the above prices too.

Then I guess the difference between them and the rest of the world is like - freight, customs, duties and taxes??

Come to think of it - it doesn't make sense

Re: Shell fuel price discussion thread. Update: Going down cheaper than PSU's.

Went to fill petrol from Shell this weekend, thinking it will be same or cheaper than the PSU bunks.
But, it was priced at 73.75 which is a good 3 Rs more than the PSUs.

I don't understand this - why Shell is costlier in Hyderabad than Bangalore, given that petrol from PSU's cost more in Bangalore than Hyderabad?

Because of the transportation.
Shell fuel is transported from Mangalore refinery to all other Shell bunks in India.
Shell Petrol/Diesel in MLR will be the least priced petrol/Diesel when compared with other Shell pumps.

It exists from Mangalore to Bangalore (owned by PSU, but shared by Shell), hence the lower prices in Karnataka. Everywhere else it has to be trucked.

Shell fuel price now is higher in Bangalore than Chennai. I remember seeing 6X.XX price (Shell unleaded petrol) displayed outside Shell station in Chennai last week.

Nope, I do not fill up at Shell regularly. Decided to try it out since the road was packed & I was right infront of the station. I usually drive down to office only on Friday's to tank up. I know the savings doesn't justify the travel from NIBM, but what the hell, atleast I get to use the Fabia once in a while
I did notice something with my 800 though, the Shell fuel seems to be much cleaner somehow, the car is definitely running much smoother.
I managed to click 2 snaps of the Fabia when I noticed the reflection after a coat of Collinite. Yet to post a full ownership report with pics though.
