Its now almost confirmed that Nissan Pixo is badge engineered A-star.
The article states that the new A-star will be also called Nissan Pixo and will be built in India and exported to other markets as Pixo.

As usual, most of the news suggest that A-star will hit the streets in October after its shown to public at Paris Motor show that will start on 4th October 2008 and end on 19 October 2008.

NEW DELHI: It’s a new car but will have three different names. For the first time in the Indian automobile history, the same car—made in India—will don three different badges in the global market.

Maruti Suzuki, manufacturer of the car, will brand it A-Star in India. The same car will be contract-manufactured by Maruti for Nissan Motors and called Pixo. And it will be the new Alto for Suzuki Motor Corporation in Europe. The car will be manufactured exclusively by Maruti Suzuki’s plant at Manesar in Haryana and will be unveiled by both companies at the Paris Motor Show next month at their respective pavilions.

Both Nissan Pixo and Suzuki Alto will compete against Toyota Aygo in the international market while it will be pitted against Hyundai i10, Fiat Palio and Tata Motors Indica Vista in the premium small-car segment in India. An MSI spokesperson refused to comment and said: “A-Star has nothing to do with Alto, which will continue to be the flagship model of Maruti Suzuki in India. It is a totally different segment.”

Splash between i10 & Swift! I think A Star will later get a 1.2 litre to compete against the i10 Kappa.

A-star by mid-nov

Saw this news today in The Hindu

The Hindu : Business : Maruti Suzuki to roll out A-Star by mid-November

Maruti Suzuki to roll out A-Star by mid-November Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Maruti Suzuki is preparing to roll out its compact car A-Star in mid-November, it is learnt.

The new offering, a five-door hatch-back, will be a world strategic model. Swift, Sx4 and Grand Vitara were among the other world strategic models that the company had launched in India. A-Star will be the eighth model launch by Suzuki in less than 40 months, underscoring its stepped-up focus on research and development in India. The car will roll out of its Manesar plant. Powered by a new K-series engine, A-Star will have a low-weight three-cylinder aluminium next-generation engine.
Gurgaon facility

The Gurgaon facility of Maruti Suzuki will make the engines. A-Star, sources say, will conform to BS-III emission norms and will have an engine capacity of 996cc. The introduction of A-Star, it is argued, will strengthen the company’s portfolio in the A2 segment.

The latest car will be Maruti Suzuki’s seventh model in the A2 segment. The company, sources claim, enjoys a 55 per cent market share in the A2 segment.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is keen to re-enter the European market with A-Star.

Sure, just looking to buy a car around Dec-Jan. Swift Vdi is bit outside the budget range so Splash Vdi sounds to be a promising option, so I'm kindda eager for any news coming my way.

About engine

Is the A-Star coming with the old Zen 996CC engine? It is said that A-Star is coming with a new K-series engine - having 996 CC. I remember, the old Zen had a 996CC engine. So, the A-Star is using it, may be with some modifications, and calling it K-series?
