Bosch plans to manufacture ABS in India by next year

NEW DELHI: German auto component major Bosch is expanding its product offerings in India with plans to start manufacturing anti-lock braking systems in the country by next year as it aims for 20 per cent growth every year.

The company is also planning to introduce other products, such as navigation systems and ultra quiet alternators as a part of its India growth strategy.

"By next March-April, we will start manufacturing anti- lock braking systems (ABS) from our production facility at Pune. This is in line with our future plans to offer latest products to our Indian customers," Bosch Managing Director V K Viswanathan said here.

The company is setting up a new production unit at its existing facility in Pune for the purpose through which it intends to meet the supply needs of its existing global original equipment (OE) customers such as Toyota, Honda and Hyundai.

Bosch had announced an investment of Rs 2,300 crore to be made between 2006 and 2010 for its overall Indian expansion.

"The investment on the ABS units will be a part of the already announced plans," Viswanathan said, adding, in 2006 the company invested Rs 400 crore, while last year Rs 450 crore.

"We will be making these kinds of investments every year," he added.

Viswanathan, however, declined to comment on the specifics such as the production capacity of the ABS unit.

A company official said once Bosch starts manufacturing the ABS in India, supplies to its existing global customers such as Toyota, Honda and Hyundai would be routed through the Indian operations.

This is good news, it can further bring down the costs of production and the whole kit.

Good news.
I hope that most of the manufacturers are able to capitalize on this. The cost should be reduced and so the manufacturers can give ABS as on option across a wide range.

Surely a step in the right direction. The days probably not too far away, that ABS becomes mandatory across the board for all cars. Local manufacturing will help control costs and support logistics.

I see Bosch India also becoming a supply hub for ABS to other countries.
