Chuck the price. Buy this car for your wife / gf in those lovely bright colors and trust me you have enough points that you cant do anything bad for the next 3 years. Chicks really dig this car.

I am wondering what made you think that NEW BEETLE will be available at 10lakhs!!! when the puny fiat 500 is priced at 16 lakhs(ex-KOCHI).
anyway in one manner it is good that it is priced at 20 lakhs, now only genuine BEETLE lovers will buy it

What is your definition of "genuine beetle lover" ?

Secondly, I thought a new version of the beetle is going to be launched abroad in 2010.
Hopefully that will be the model launched here, and not the current one.

20 lakhs is serious money for a such a pony( albeit very cute) car. Anyway VW is doing it for the brand awareness so volumes is not what they are aiming for.

Being Objective

The Bettle being launched is the "New Beetle" this had Zero in common mechancially with the decades long running and selling Original Beetle.

So though cute and lovable it is not really a piece of history.

the new car can be compared closer to the Fabia - Golf - Jetta - Polo range from VW Group with common components from the engine and interiors of these cars.

20L is a bit high but then it is just aimed at showcasing the VW group capabilities and not intended to be a best seller. 10L would have been a more appropriate price if they had actually intended to sell these in India. I sell largely in the 2 door format which too is not suitable for the Indian market.

All said and done an exibition effort rather than something that is aimed at actual sales out here.

thanks for posting these prices,
that shows even in germany it ranges from 11.92lakhs to 16.20 lakhs
as per todays conversion rate of 1euro-68.68INR.
Then I cant understand how some guys in this forum expected VW to sell the NEW BEETLE forRs.10-12lakhs

by the way,a genuine beetle lover is one who is passionate about its shape and looks, not its size or performance!!

the NEW BEETLE Was never sold as a cheap car even in US/UK.
It will be definitely a niche segment car like the FIAT500 and it should be like that also otherwise the novelty of the model will be lost

Its the old VW Beetle (original) thats to be sold in India. This car should have been in India long back in its hey days. The car is many decades past its prime. After 21 million units were sold, (a record as no car, not even the Model T Ford has sold as many) the production was shifted from Wolfsburg, Germany to Mexico maybe sometime in 1974. The Golf came by and became a best seller soon in Germany, the western and many other markets. Brazil also made many Beetle's till it was discontinued there. They were popular as taxis in Brazil too.
Now westerners import it only for nostalgic reasons, if import laws and pollution norms permit.
The rear engine (the car is known to understeer) and its polluting ability, sluggishness while moving may affect the faster cars moving on our roads and the fast traffic these days. The two door configuration is'nt very popular in India.
The plus point is that the car is very, very reliable, economical on maintenance and can be driven in any kind of climatic conditions. Remember, the Beetle was the first car to be driven in Antarctica in the 1960's.
When I had been to Germany in 2001, I could sight only one Beetle on the roads of the 1960's vintage, that was immaculately maintained. Shows that they have almost dissappeared from the roads in their home market as a daily use car as these cannot cope up with the AutoBahn traffic moving @ nearly 125-150 kmph.
