If Ford/Hyundai can do it, So can I - Maruti Alto achieves mileage of 41.5 kmpl

"If the big boys can lie thru their nose, so can I".. That seems to be the latest slogan from Maruti marketing guys.

India's most popular car, Maruti Suzuki Alto achieved a spectacular mileage of 41.5 kilometers per litre (kmpl) in a fuel efficiency rally in the city, yesterday. The top 10 participants achieved a mileage of over 36.5 kmpl of petrol. The Mileage Rally was third in the series as a part of company's initiative to reinforce the supremacy of Alto as the most fuel efficient car in its category and inculcate driving practices that enhance fuel efficiency....

Read on .. Moneycontrol >> News >> Press- Market >> Maruti Suzuki Alto achieves mileage of 41.5 km to a litre

PS: On a personal note, Nobody believed me when I said my Baleno once gave me a milage of 20kmpl

hahhaa...this had to be!

But what I read here is that the customers had come in with their car and drove them, unlike the Fiesta one where they had 'Auto Experts' drive them.

This seems more realistic (not because I own one!).

Another mileage gimmick from auto manufacturers, with this time MUL doing the honours.

erm.. If you look at the source at the bottom of the news item - "Sourced From: Adfactors Public Relations Pvt Ltd" . Which basically means the story was planted with some cash probably changing hands.

I wont be surprised if this "Milage Rally" took place inside some overenthusiastic PR guy's mind !!

My 1993 Kawasaki gave 101 kmpl for four litres once in 1995. Never crossed 70 kmpl again.

Hoo ha ha!
Why don't they sell this technology to the world and help all in this crunching times of rising fuel prices?

Tomorrow, Merc and Beeyem will also claim about 50km/l or what?

But to be very fair, the maximum I've achieved in my Alto is 27km/l and I will never forget how hard I tried to control my feet to get that. 41.5?? Hoo ha ha ha!

Actually such mileage claims are achieved through hypermiling and often not repeatable in the real world!

They include a very light driver, virtually no payload, switching off on downward slopes, wind favouring your motion (instead of a drag) and also engine in a state of tune that makes it barely driveable otherwise!

Have heard this from Auto Service's (Bangalore) Venkat Shyam. He holds several mileage records on his F4 Champion!

Then what were the moves made by Hyundai, Renault and Ford. Everyone uses these thing. I remember once reading in Auto India about the competetion where one is supposed to extract maximum fuel efficiency from two wheelers.

Kinetic Honda would give 70.XX kmpl, Sleek, CD100 and 4S Champion would give around 95.XX kmpl.

This seems to be this type of thing. 20-22 kmpl is understood and can be achieved through very light foot. But not normally. If I am allowed to drive Alto in city ( A'bad ), it would give 16 kmpl. But thats it, I cant extract more.

41.5 kmpl at a time when Jaguar err sorry typo...TATA is about to launch their NANO.
Hmm Alto's already feeling the heat looks like and have started early.
Wonder if NANO has to do a stunt like this what would its figures be.
