After seeing Hyundai's vindication of a perfect I10 as kappa, I wonder what good is 1.1? I mean what good it is? Why should one buy it? And should the people who bought it only regret? For no mistake of theirs, they have a car which has an old engine, less power and now the Hyundai asks people to buy a new one with new engine, more power, and same mileage as the one they already have! Why should i not be dejected?

If the price difference is the reason enough they say, then heck, you established that 1.1 is inferior.

Well, we one of the members of our forum, MutantX actually upgraded from a 1.1 to a 1.2 Sportz

I have heard from my friends that the mileage of the kappa engine is around 10 kph only under normal city driving conditions. May be off topic .But the thing that really surprised was that the research and development of the i10 kappa engine has costs $421 million. How far this can be true. Can somebody share their views. If at all it costs this much whopping amount then when will they reach the break in period of this huge investment.

@ganesh

I think maybe the info is correct because seeing Hyundai's Loyalty towards 1.2 Kappa - in i10 and i20. They are really stuck with the 1.2 Engine.

But anyways the engine is good but has a bit enhausting ride in City conditions(personal Opinion).

yea kappa is good. I have changed from an iRDE to Kappa. I do find a lot of difference between the engines. The city ride is almost the same. Kappa seem to be a bit lagging because of low low end torque, but take her to the highway that is when you can explore the real sprite of the engine.

I own a Santro 1.1 and have always found it power response better than the Kappa's for the city. Other things not withstanding, I would pick the Epsilon for city.

As far as the highway is concerned, despite of a huge improvement over the Epsilon... I would still not buy an i10 1.2 for the job.
Just my two cents.

i10 1.1 is better than 1.2 anyday for city drives (which is where we spend 90% of our driving hours).

1.2 was hyped to start with; roping in SRK ensured the marketing hogwash worked.

The kappa may be good in highways at high speeds. But the point is - for a car to be good at highways, just having a good engine is not enough. You could as well fit a kappa engine in a maruti 800 and claim that the car is great on the highways.

agree. but i think i10 is quite decent on highways, except for the tyres! definitely better than competitors santro, wagonr and estilo.

1.1 is a very old engine. Price-wise, its only 14K cheaper.

I see no reason to buy 1.1 whatsoever when a new, much more refined and much more powerful engine is available at not so much of a premium as that could cost for a good ICE.

And to those who are preferring 1.1 due to better city conditions - Buy the Santro much cheaper with the same 1.1 engine - it performs better in city traffic than the i10 due to reduced kerb weight and would give better FE as well.

Not sure about the FE part, but Santro is definitely zippier than i10 1.1 in city traffic.

But since i10 is more spacious, i10 1.1 makes more sense than Santro.

So for predominantly city use, i10 1.1 > Santro 1.1 > i10 1.2

true to the words of most of the folks here even i can vouch that santro 1.1 feels peppier then i10 kappa in city. Even on highways santro is fun to drive, just rev the engine and it truly goes to 140-150 kph with ease man. Kappa definately feels more refined but i just love the raw nature of santro and the eagerness of the engine to climb speeds. With kappa its more of a hush hush affair and you sort of feel disconnected with the engine. I'll simply say santro is more fun to drive out of the two.

well, to each its own. But the difference in interior space of Santro and i10 are marginal. In fact, i10 should have been launched with 1.2 in the first place, and there's a reason i10 1.1 is only available in the lower trims.

Again - they keyword is "feels" peppier. It you shift gears in the right rev-band a DOHC 1.2 80 ps will be light years ahead of 1.1 67ps.

Btw, best hatch for city use i10 1.2 AT or i20 1.4 AT . No other cars or no other brands have ATs in hatches.

Lots of people commented - IRDE for the city, Kappa for the highway.

Well, the 1.2 K series from Suzuki gives you both - as good as to drive in the city as the iRDE, and much better than the Kappa in the highways, more fuel efficient as well. So why bother with Kappa at all. Well, probably because of the feel good beige interior and marginally more equipment than the comparable Maruti (Swift/Ritz). Can't think of anything else.
