Tata should move out from WB as soon as they can.

Although, I still cherish my memories of studying at REC Durgapur for four years, but I am no fan of their work culture. The mess workers used to go on strike every year a day before our odd semester exams were about to be started. And the Principal never budged to postpone the papers. In the tussle between management and staff all who suffered were we students.

It is the same case here. In the a tussle between Mamta di and Buddha babu, sufferers are the Tatas and those land losers who were promised job opportunities and other better amenities.

If Tata's do pull out it will be a killer blow for WB as no other Big Industrial house will even think of setting up business there. In the end people protesting will definitely suffer as well.

Mamta Banerjee cares a hoot about affected farmers. She is in opposition and it is her job to oppose. Overnight if she is made the CM, she will sing a diffrent tune. More than affected farmers, it is Mamta who is cringing, to extract maximum political mileage. It is Bengal's misfortune that all these years communists kept investments at bay and finally when communists are changing, Trinamul steps in to do the same.

Different state govts. have different rules and may be WB Govt. required Tatas to acquire land through them and hence all the controversy. Any Govt. collects money by huge shovel-loads but pays by teaspoons. Govt. pockets the difference. WB Govt. probably did not compensate farmers adequately and hence all the commotion. Had Tatas done acqusition themselves, things would have been incident-free because they are known to compensate generously.

In the end however I will blame Tatas for venturing into WB, a state written off by investors. Haven't they heard of Andhra Pradesh? Haven't they heard of Visakhapatnam with its world class twin ports and its consistent record at handling highest tonnage? Why not AP for a change?

They should consider Kerala instead!
The government itself will organise enough Hartals against any opposing groups that they won't have anything to do and eventually will give up the land and run away to Gelf where they'll become rich. One day, they'll return home and buy all Tata products. Two birds in one shot!

Such a situation will never occur in TN. I can guarantee you that. Here's more information as to why TATA Motors made a big mistake by not approaching this state. Add to the below a world class port facility that ships Hyundai and Ford cars to the four corners of the globe.

The city is base to around 30% of India's automobile industry and 35% of its auto components industry. A large number of automotive companies including Hyundai, Ford, BMW, Mitsubishi, The TVS Group, Ashok Leyland, Nissan-Renault, TI Cycles of India, TAFE Tractors, Royal Enfield, Caterpillar Inc., Caparo Industries and Madras Rubber Factory (MRF), have manufacturing plants in and around Chennai. The Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi produces military vehicles, including India's main battle tank: Arjun MBT. The Integral Coach Factory manufactures railway coaches and other rolling stock for Indian Railways. This very industrial expanse has given the name to Chennai as being the "Detroit of Southern Asia".The Ambattur-Padi industrial zone houses many textile manufacturers, and an SEZ for apparel and footwear manufacture has been set up in the southern suburbs of the city. Chennai contributes more than 50% of India's leather exports.

The city is an electronics manufacturing hub where multinational corporations like Dell, Nokia, Motorola , Samsung , Flextronics and Foxconn have set up electronics and hardware manufacturing plants, mainly in the Sriperumbudur Special Economic Zone. Many software and software services companies have development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14% of India's total software exports of Rs.144,214 crores during 2006–07, making it the second-largest exporter of software in the country, behind Bangalore . Prominent financial institutions, including the World Bank, HSBC and Citibank have back-office operations in the city.Telecom giants Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer and chemicals giant Dow Chemicals have research and development facilities in Chennai. TICEL bio-tech park and Golden Jubilee bio-tech park at Siruseri outside of Chenai house biotechnology companies and laboratories.

Tatas rev up Plan B after Singur sting

New Delhi: Tata Motors appears to have started working on a Plan B for the Nano. It is gearing up to roll out a couple of thousand units a month from its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand, according to vendor sources. This may help the Tatas meet the October deadline for Nano’s launch, despite the ongoing trouble at its plant at Singur in West Bengal.

Highly placed sources told TOI that the company is planning to produce around 100 units a day at its plant in Uttarakhand.“The company plans to produce about 3,000 units a month in Uttarakhand. While the figure is relatively low keeping in mind the company’s overall production targets, it would certainly help them meet the October deadline if the turmoil at Singur continues,” a source said. The company had earlier said that it would go in for multiple locations for manufacturing the Rs 1 lakh car.

A company spokesperson said: “Tata Motors maintains that Singur would be the ‘first’ and mother plant for Nano.” But he refused to comment on other manufacturing locations.

Vendors are now gearing up to meet the company’s call to supply material at its Uttarakhand plant. “Our material has already gone to them,” a key vendor said. However, sources maintained that production in Uttarakhand does not mean that the company has given up on Singur. “What is being envisaged is only a part of the total production. Singur continues to remain the main production hub, as of now,” a source said.

Many vendors, who are not based in Uttarakhand, said that while they would be able to meet requirement for a few thousand units, it would not be possible to provide enough supply for a higher production level in case the company decides to ramp up the plant’s capacity. “It would require a new facility if the numbers go up from here,” one of them said.

I second that. Eventhough we had initial hurdles in the new TATA plant in talks, we are sure it will be taken care. Also, if TATA plans to export the NANO, this is one of the best locaiton with harbour. An do remember that HYUNDAI was the first to compelte the 1 milion santro export in fastest time. So, it shows the capacity of the harbours handling too (in addition to Hyundai themselves)

But I was just wondering why no one from TN has offered anythign so far to TATA. Or are they so confident that TATA will just choose sriperambadur?

Tata can also utilise the Ranjangaon plant for the time being. It's a big plant with mostly unutilised capacity. It's close to the Pune plant too.

Tatas got into trouble for their Titanium mining and refining plant in TN where the Government is playing filp-flop with their MOU. Tatas Motors does own 100 acres south of Chennai. I am sure they must have reasons for not getting into this state.

Now that almost every State government is approaching Tata, I'm sure they won't have same/similar issues in setting up a plant elsewhere.

I'd say that Karnataka with it's latest offer to Tata sounds best as of now. Their ports aren't much utilised and can be developed for better uses. Electricity could be a problem though but Central pool can be sought out I think.
