'Old' vehicles to be phased out in 16 cities

Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Patna are among 16 cities in the country where old vehicles will soon be phased out. The phase-out will extend to private and commercial vehicles.

One more epic fail from the traffic police and RTO in the making. One more avenue to make tons of money. Tons of fake papers being worked on.

Well, i would be happy to see the old buses phased out and replaced with CNG ones like they have in Delhi.

Last time when the Karnataka High Court announced this, there was a total bundh organized by all the truck operators and even the maxicab operators, taxi drivers supported this. Not sure whether this will be implemented as the truckers lobby in the govt is too strong to take any decisions like this.

Although, I personally favour this, but this will be again an eyewash and nothing can be done by anybody.

Why cant they just introduce a road-worthiness test where you need to renew your vehicles' registeration every year?

All yellow num. plate vehicles already have this. For the first 4 or 6 years, it is once evey 2 years; but after that, it is an annual ritual.

And, IIRC, "National Permit" goods and passengers carriers already have to be replaced every 10 years or so. (they can continue on non-national permits).

Fc is done every 15 years....i think it should be reduced to 10...and 2 strokes have to be banned!!!!!!!!!!

This is utter nonsense! some of the old cars are in way better shape than new TATA or Fiats. They need to bring out some kind of a road-worthiness test for these so called old cars. And those vehicles found to be in good condition should be allowed back on the roads

So what happens to some of us who have old Yamaha's/ Yesdi's ?

Commercial vehicles need Fitness certification done ,every year.
Its quite strict in TN.

They've been telling this "Tiger story" for quite a while. Don't know if its true,this time around.

Why exactly do you think new tata and Fiat vehicles are in worse shape than old vehicles ? Tata I can understand the public prejudice , but why Fiat ?

In Bombay you do have to get a car more than 15 years old certified every year for road worthiness.

the vintage and classic cars too have to go through this too spawnofsatan. the guys at the RTO are very linient towards them.

It's the same here in Delhi too, infact I personally saw the certification cum re-registration of a 1989 Jaguar XJ . However the road worthiness test only involves seeing whether the car is actually running and not finer intricacies like tread depth etc.

This is another wierd policy much like the import policy which says that used vehicles that are more than 3 years old cannot be imported into the country, even though 5 year vehicles from Japan can rock the socks off pretty much anything in the same price range here. Not to mention due to strict quality checks and tests, the vehicles are in top running condition(much like some of the older vehicles that owners have so dearly maintained).
Protecting Indian industries? Allowing them to produce sub-standard, over-priced goods more like it. Aarghh! :(
