There is no option but to 'accept' the hike.

The alternative is to use Shell, which may be cheaper than the PSU, for now at least.

I had always thought that the gap between diesel and petrol would be a minimum of Rs.10, but the way things are going it might never get close to 10.

Indeed. The UPA Govt might have had its failings (quite of a lot of them), but the phased removal of diesel subsidy was a masterstroke. Earlier when diesel prices were hiked by 2-3Rs, there were instances of anti-socials (in the grab of party workers) destroying public property. But not a whimper after the Re0.50 monthly increase.

BTW, the new Govt. is also banking on the "public memory is short" logic. Increase prices of everything (train-fare, petrol, diesel, LPG etc) in the initial days and while there will be public anger, it will be forgotten soon and just before the next election, throw some sops to get votes. And funny thing is the TN CM also did exactly the same on coming to power (raised prices of milk, bus-fare etc), but whenever the Centre (UPA or NDA) hikes prices, she cries foul.

Hi Folks, According to the Economic Times newspaper's Mumbai edition of today the fuel price hike is credited to Iraq. Here are some snaps with the latest pricing of the Petrol and Diesel:

Re: The Official Fuel Prices Thread

With the number of times fuel prices going up, no point in cribbing over this. Accept the fact and move on.

Not much the govt can do apart from reducing the tax component which they wont. Drive wisely to extract better FE from your car is all we can do.

My worry is that the government might seek to cross-subsidize Diesel with surreptitious increases in Petrol prices.

Heck, even Aircraft Turbine Fuel is cheaper than Petrol! (Petrol is 80.40 per liter vs Rs 70 per liter for ATF)

Every time I visit Goa, I'm dumbstruck as to how forward thinking the government there is! It's a full Rs 20 lower than neighboring Karnataka & on par with Diesel.

But then again, Goa has IITian Parrikar while we have Siddu.

Re: The Official Fuel Prices Thread

Shell buys from IOC, so ultimately the prices will be in synch. Once the Diesel subsidy is zero, then in the long term I will expect the independents - Reliance (when they reopen), Essar and co to be cheaper since their overheads may be lower.

Also, indications are that a Diesel operation (graded price hikes) may be in the offing for the subsidized LPG. Kerosene is anybody's guess; since it is accepted that it is normally not available to the poor, and is mostly used as a adulterant in Diesel. Taxation apart, the price of K-oil and ATF should be about the same. Only QC is higher in the latter.

I filled up yesterday at Shell in Rajajinagar, Bangalore at Rs 80.40/l. They apparently revised their price immediately after the PSUs did.

Re: The Official Fuel Prices Thread

Before this latest hike, petrol was costlier than diesel in Chennai only by Rs.13.64. Ever since the Re0.50 monthly hike in diesel was put in place by the UPA Govt, the huge differential between the two fuels was slowly reducing.

Now, with the latest hike, the delta has increased to Rs.15.23. I just hope we don't go back to the old situation.
