Tanked up a full 30 liters on Wednesday evening and ended up paying 51 rs / liter.

1 hour later, came to know of the price reduction!

Fuel Pricing.

Just a couple of questions for everybody:

1. Has anyone noticed that in the past if fuel prices were raised or lowered by Rs. x, then the final change would be Rs. x + y, where y = sales tax, cess, surcharges and octroi (state taxes). Now for the first time, the last two fuel price decreases have been exactly as announced all over India ?

2. Has anyone wondered why fuel is cheaper inland, far from ports, refineries and where it costs more to transport?

AFAIK, fuel prices across India vary not because of transport costs, but because of state taxes.

A Barrel of Crude Oil is an Imperial Barrel and is equal to 159 Liters.

For example, if today's trading price of Crude is USD 39.80 then 1 barrel will cost $ 39.8 x Rs. 49.90 = Rs. 1986.02.
Therefore 1 liter of high quality (sweet = low sulphur) crude oil will cost 1986.02 divided by 159 liters = Rs. 12.49.

Now remember that a 'mixed basket' of crude ( with sour = high sulphur) is at least $ 5 lower. That's less than Rs. 11/- per liter !

Each liter of crude oil gives a set of distillates with value addition.

Now let your imagination run wild !

Why not one uniform price across India?

State taxes are one of the many tools we have given to our Government to achieve it's goal for the benefit of us all.

This is the closest example that you will get to a self-goal in a game of football !!

Why not one uniform price across India? After all, for the last two decreases in price, it was exactly Rs. 5.00 for petrol and Rs. 2.00 for diesel all across India. So, where did the State Taxes go ? This was not the case when the the same prices went up. The hike and the 'taxes' were separate !!

Guess what? Lightening struck twice at the same spot - and no one noticed !

This site has it. It is a Government site:

Oil Prices and Taxes

Since this is a Government site, the Jan. reduction of Rs. 5/2 is not shown!!!

Yay! Thats the way to go.

During the last cuts petrol was cut by 10 bucks but diesel by only 4 bucks.
And I was thinking my decision to buy the vista Tdi was not that good.

Now some sanity is prevailing with the difference b/w petrol and diesel back to 15 Rs. Thats how it should be and only then will it make sense to buy a diesel car with the huge premium in the beginning.

Maybe someone in the Government believed the posts here in TBHP and took pity on the long suffering customers of TATA, Skoda & Fiat!

Cheers,
