The other day I filled up petrol from an Essar petrol pump here in Nashik with petrol price Rs. 86.99/lt

Not sure about the exact pricing at HP, BP and Indian Oil bunks but even their price is above Rs. 85.06/lt I am sure. Thanks to addition of LBT, prices of fuel in Nashik and majority of Maharashtra are among the highest in the country at the moment

MH, KA and TN must be the costliest. Then the Octroi (or LBT) which probably exists only in MH adds to the woes.

I always felt KA to be the costliest, but the ealier govt went on reducing the tax percentage as the petrol prices were climbing up, to keep the prices at least 50 paisa cheaper than the usual.

After the elections, the new govt decided to shave off 50-60 paisa on diesel tax. So with this, I guess MH people must be paying one of the highest fuel price in India.

TN is still cheaper than KA

that means it is a kick in the unmentionables to the extremely vulnerable lower class, who struggle to keep heads above water. There are plenty of people who go to a petrol pump and ask the attendent to fill up Rs. 50 worth of petrol. & these guys keep getting lesser and lesser.

In Kolkata its 83.63, higher than Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai but less than Pune / Navi Mumbai.

The state government is in no mood to reduce the 25% VAT component.

Why not. The under recovery may come down to Rs.10 from 14, that is all. Any subsidy in any form leads to more inflation. I think we should be intelligent to see that.

@rajshenoy; My son has been in KA from 1997 till this year, so I should know. He had a car since 1999. Last year I spent five weeks in Manipal, as Samurai will vouch for. Now our son has moved to HR with his wife following in a month or two.

In the meanwhile, going below the radar, the rulers have already increased fuel prices for bulk customers since past 2 months: read that as ,state SRTC, Railways, & Defence' by Rs. 14 as punishment for buying this dastardly commodity in bulk. It is sly move to destroy public sector in India in one fall swoop.

Also, raise election funds by pocketing (part of) the difference between the pump and bulk prices. Why only the the Public Sector, the private sector as well.

Totally expected. what about the things which are bleeding us dry - Diesel, Kerosene and LPG. Cut the subsidy to zero and see the rupee at 50-55 levels.

All three are more politically sensitive, & lesser dependent on market volatility. None of governments has the guts to increase their prices in year of polls.

However, an important observation I made regarding domestic natural gas connection in NCR is approximately Rs.45 per kg, which means a domestic gas cylinder should cost under Rs.650. However, we are charged approximately Rs.850 for the cylinder supplied to our homes . Any reasons of the differential?
