If the govt feels diesel cars are more polluting then why would they increase petrol prices by 17 rs !!!? They are just forcing people to switch to diesel.

India needs some good hybrids, like AS-freakin-AP !!!

a minimum Rs 5 increase it quoted.
I wonder why they don't double the price of the fuel and let it stay thatway for the next 8 odd years. Price changes up until 2003 were good now days they shock me more.

I wonder why they cruelly look at lower taxes as loss of profit, or taxes as such. Increase of price might just decrease usage by a percentage, not that they are increasing the taxes to conserve petrol for later generations.
dont know if they ever considered lowering taxes or probably nowadays, they consider petrol a commodity like salt, but with a catch. they think it'd sell in the same volume, regardless of the price.

One optio im considering is moving to CNG.
But hey, if people start using cng more they'd slap heavy taxes on Gobar gas too.

Or

Do like grandma says they'd done with the 7 seater master Buick during the world war time when petrol was scarce, gotten a gas plant to power the car! and ran the car on coal-steam power, it will still be cheaper than running the car on petrol.

If that is the case fuel must be cheaper in Mumbai because of oil drilling offshore at Bombay High.
How then would you explain the cheapest petrol & diesel prices in Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar islands) which is in middle of Bay of Bengal.
Infact by that logic fuel should be costliest at it travels a long distance from the Indian mainland

I dont know whether the question has been raised or not in previous post till now!!

I just ant to ask these bloody guys that if they know they(oil companies) are getting loss around 225,000 crores INR. in a fiscal year !!

Source: Govt weighs political cost of oil price hike - Yahoo! India News

Then how come they have money to provide sponsorships, events, advertisements ,hoardings , publicity !!!

I must say they are just making JACKASS out of us and government !!

If they do have losses then government should ask them to stop these all types of nonsense and wasting these money
, well as per the idea they must be wasting around 200 -500 crores worth of money in advertisements and all every year easily !!

Why is it so ? just to get more attention from public to increase their share in market ! whats the use ?

There are just three oil companies who are capturing the market and all 3 are government bodies not private like SHELL and RIL which have just a normal share on the oil sector right now!!

Using Sania mirza ,karthikeyan ,dhoni for the advertisements must have cost them a lot !!!

If i would have been in government body , firstly i would have thrown those people in front of public asking for the

The difference in prices is mostly due to pure tax. It has very little to do with transportation charges.

Agreed. But petrol in Hyd is costlier than Vizag by Re 1, and it is mainly due to transportation. Vizag has a refinery.

Actual cost of petro products and taxes

Taxes on petro products

Crude 5% customs duty

petro products 7.5% import duty

Taxes on Petrol sold

Excise 33%

Customs 4%

Sales tax 33% ( No VAT here)

Taxes on diesel

Excise 15%

customs 7%

Sales tax 22.25% ( No VAT here)

If all the taxes are removed on crude and petro products the actual cost of

Petrol 28.53

Diesel 12.15

Estimated income for govt due to different taxes on
petro products is Rs 1,14,900 crores

these rates are almost same when crude was $70 per barrel and now when it is $125 per barrel.

these rates does not include additional duties levied by state govt's

Amount lost by Petro companies on different petro products due to taxes.

petrol Rs 16.34 per every ltr sold

diesel Rs 23.49 per ltr

LPG( cooking gas) Rs 305.9 per cylinder

Kirosine Rs 28.72 per ltr

Per day Rs 580 crores loss

Most of the petro companies are owned by GOI.

So GOI gets buoyant tax revenues from petro products and Oil companies lose.

It is like one hand is gaining and the other hand is bleeding

Just imagine how much the private players will be losing with similar prices. At least Reliance has its own refinery and cost may be lower but companies like Shell have to purchase and/or transport crude/refined oil from else where.

AFAIK reliance exports all the petroleum product from its refinery rather than selling here because that way they make more money

If we take the US prices as indicative of competitively sold oil then the cost comes to about Rs40/ltr. So when we pay Rs55/lt for petrol and Rs 35/lt for diesel (both cost the same actually in intl market) we are actually paying more than the international prevailing rates, so there is no bleeding hand here. The perception of loss is created just because the govt spends the more than half of the oil money it gets on public/govt expenditure.

Reliance built another refinery plant that they are not able to run now because they had to shut down the fuel stations as they were not given subsidy.
Reliance is in slight trouble right now because of this. Yes, they export all the refined product, and are able to survive. This partiality from government is really bad. If they start providing subsidy to atleast reliance, then most of the people wont visit the IOC/BP/HP fuel stations and these companies wont be able to rob us.

The government taxation, if reduced, can easily contribute to reduced fuel cost with which almost all are comfortable.
