Tata seems to be very aggressive and betting in this practical EV of 200KM per charge in Indica.

Tata Motors buys majority stake in Norwegian firm Quote:
Mumbai, Tata Motors has picked up a majority stake in Norway-based Miljo Grenland/Innovasjon, which specialises in developing solutions for electric vehicles.
Tata Motors UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre, has acquired a 50.3 per cent in Miljo for Rs 9.4 crore, said a release from the company.
The existing shareholders will retain the balance shares and will continue to be associated with the venture.
Miljo will produce electric vehicles based on Tata Motors products, besides manufacturing polymer lithium ion batteries and developing related technologies, the release said.
Tata Motors has been working with this company to develop the electric version of the Indica.
There have been reports that Tata Motors has been working with Miljo Grenland to develop an electric-Nano too. European countries have shown an interest in an electric version of the Nano.
We are looking at the creation of an electric car. This financial year we are doing it for Norway. And we hope to launch it in other markets in the next financial year, Mr Ratan Tata had said at the companys annual general meeting in July.
The first electric vehicle to be developed by the company will be the Indica EV. It is scheduled for launch in Europe during 2009.
Unlike existing electric vehicles, the Indica EV will be a more practicable option for the consumer; capable of carrying four people, with adequate luggage space, a predicted range of up to 200 km and acceleration of 0-60 kmph in under 10 seconds, said the release.
About the possible India launch of the Indica EV in 2009, a Tata Motors spokesperson said the company was yet to decide on that.
Tata Motors believes that this investment in Miljo will help the company realise its strategy to develop convenient, affordable and sustainable mobility solutions through electric and hybrid vehicles, it said.
Asked about earlier tie-ups that Miljo had entered into with other companies to develop and produce electric vehicles, the spokesperson said there used to be some contracts like that. Now that Tata Motors has acquired the majority stake they will produce only for Tata Motors.

Last time i read about Indica EV they were going to use the old Indica as the platform. I do hope that when they actually bring it to market they do so with the Vista and not the old Indica.
Launching it on the old vehicle, makes the cost of the car less, as they have already made good return on the investment.
And launching EV on Vista will affect their Vista's European sales. It is pilot prject at Norway, if it succeeds, India will get its first practical EV (even on the Vista model)
Nano electric roll-out in Europe in 30 months
Tata Motors on Tuesday said it will launch the electric version of the world's cheapest car Nano in Europe within the next two-and-a-half years, although no timeline has been fixed for its rollout at home.
"The electric Nano will be launched in Europe in two-and- a-half years and it will be launched in select markets like Britain and the Scandinavian countries first, and gradually in other nations," Tata Motors [ Get Quote ] vice-chairman Ravi Kant told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday.
The company, which unveiled the electric version of the small car -- Tata Nano [ Images ] EV -- would also launch the version in the domestic market. However, no possible timeframe has been fixed for its launch in the home market.
"We have not decided the time line for launch of the electric Nano in India [ Images ], but we are looking at it," Kant said.
Asked about the pricing of the Nano EV, he said it would be decided at the time of launch.
The Nano EV would be four-seater, instead of the five-seater existing Nano. The electric car, using super polymer lithium battery, would have 160km battery range and would touch a speed of 60km in 10 seconds.
The European version of the small car -- Nano Europa -- would be exported from India in the next two years, Tata Motors managing director for India operations PM Telang said.
On an electric Indica Vista, Tata Motors' Kant said the company would start selling the car in Europe from this year.
"The Indica Vista EV will be introduced in select European countries, beginning this year. We will progressively introduce electric vehicles in all relevant markets," he said.
Earlier, the company said it could launch an electric version of its flagship passenger car Indica in domestic market simultaneously with its European launch.
Tata Motors has been developing the electric Indica with a Norwegian firm for launching in the British, Norwegian and Danish markets by 2011, which will mark the global launch of the car.
At the Geneva Motor Show, the company also showcased its multi-purpose vehicle Aria, the sedan Indigo [ Images ] Manza, besides some other vehicles.

i think it will be tough for people to buy a 10 lac+ electric indica and a 5 lac plus nano.
unless tata works on some miracle pricing , both of them will do dismal numbers.

I read somewhere of Tata's policy of letting the customers lease batteries rather than buying them. This way, the upfront cost will be brought down and the company opens up a recurrent revenue stream. Don't know how the bank loan would work out though.
Also if other state governments follow Delhi government's example of not taxing electric vehicles, then maybe the cost to the customer can be brought under control.
Anyways, if people can buy the Prius for such ridiculous amounts, then I dont think they will shy away from the Nano Europa EV considering the pride attached to Nano's development in India.
