It ain't any illusion. The Trekkers used to fit larger tyres with the Jeep type thread for rear wheels in view of the excess passengers it accommodates.

I have seen similar bigger tyres in the early 80s in many Ambassador Taxis at Kanyakumari and the difference was so noticeable.

Yes, I travel in Trekker, almost every day.

Thats a nice picture and the Trekker really looks well maintained. The stance also gives the feeling of a well planted vehicle. Thanks, thats the best photo in this thread of an almost extinct species.

Re: Old Hindustan Trekker

Trekker was available till the mid 90s. Infact, there was a time, if I remember correctly it was around 1995-97, HM sold them in reasonable numbers. That was before the introduction of 3-wheeled, seven seater Tempo Minidor which has steering.

Yes, this is more likely to be the case. It could also be a case of conversion from personal to commercial registration. Not sure because we have separate alphabet for commercial vehicles..T, U, V, W, X, Y, TA and so on.

There is no seperate alphabet or series in Kerala for commercial vehicles. The said Trekker would have been brought to Kerala from some other state and got it registered here and hence the post 1989 registration. Simple.

Re: Old Hindustan Trekker

Yes I remember the HM Porter, the Trekker with a platform to carry load. A name that perfectly fits. Pushpak was late gen trekker and a passenger carrier.

Re: Old Hindustan Trekker

This was during 1995 when dad moved to a new factory which was 20 kms from the highway and 25kms to the nearest town. 15 kms of this road passes thru small bushy forest and the employees and their families were given the trekker for out of colony trips.

The trekker was comfortable for us and had lots of space. It was easy for women to get in and out. It was more silent than the jeeps of those times. The only problem with this particular vehicle is that it was very slow. Never crossed 50 or so and we would always crack jokes about its ability. The ladies felt it was safe as it was slow.

One year after we moved here, there was a robbery where 2 thieves came running, jumped into the trekker when it slowed down at a pot hole and snatched off one of the employee wife's chain and jumped off and disappeared into the bushes all in split seconds while the trekker was still moving.

That was the end to it. After a few weeks a new jeep replaced the trekker.

Brought back old memories. India garage, till a few months had some stock of trekker parts. Recently they sold off every HM parts to scrap.

Regards,
Krishna.

Re: Old Hindustan Trekker

Here in Bokaro Steel City SAIL uses Pushpak for most of it's department. Its also used by jharkhand police and I have even seen new cars on road, I think it's still on sale.
