Heard this strange observation from a mechanic who said that
1. Corolla's brakes wear out every 5-10k kms
2. The AC Compressor is due for a change at 30k Kms.
3. The auto trannys get damaged very easily if you wade through water in your corolla.

Would like to know if there is any truth in all this. I always thought of the corolla to be a good reliable car. Am I wrong ?

After all the qualis was a very reliable vehicle.

I would like corolla owners here to share their experiences along these lines.

Only thing I have heard is that it is a bullet proof car.

My office has 2 old corollas, one MT and one AT. MT has done more than 80,000kms and has been abused like mad.

AT is 40,000kms+ and still going strong. None of the drivers told me of any problems.

Slightly O.T but here goes

I recently TD'ed a 2004 Corolla A/T for a friend. The stick needed a firm shove to slot in and I could hear some kind of grinding noise (intermittent) from the drive train. There was also a very slight jerk while moving from standstill. Is this a busted A/T? The ODO says 23k but the interiors and the overall condition says at least 45k.

Now these are the weirdest comments I have ever heard about the Corollas
My personal 2006 Corolla has only 20K kms on the odo and have encountered no problems with the car as such....brakes & the ABS are as good as ever. The reason I am saying "as such" is that a month back I tried to open the car (after a week of holiday) with the remote key and was unable to do so. Upon opening the car via the doorlock, I found that the car wouldn't even take the initial ignition (i.e. at the first turn of the key when all the dashboard lights come on). I found the battery totally drained off and dead and had to replace it. I found it pretty strange that a car battery will go dead in a little more than 2 years especially since I had got the car serviced only in May '08 (maybe they did not top up the battery levels during service).
But chances are that it was a problem with the battery rather than the car itself (experts may please comment on this).

Anyway, my friends have 2003/2004 Corollas which have clocked around 75 - 80K (two manuals and one auto) and none of the problems you mention have been reported. The cars haven't been affected by floods though which is why I can't say much about your last observation.

My mother-in-law has july 2006 Corolla AT. The ODO reads 55K. None of these problems were reported until now.

John, looks like misplaced information. I've hardly heard about any issues with the Corolla both on the forum, as well as otherwise.

i had a 2006 model corolla m/t and used for 65k during the year it was with me before selling

not even a single penny was spent on the car other than regular maintenance

Just wanted to get it clarified benny, the corolla is one of the cars in my radar for the next car in the distant future.

I drove a 30000 mile done corolla for 2 days, long drives, mix of city and highway. The car was a rental, as as we all know everybody loves to abuse rental cars. However, this baby was smooth, and felt like a new car. The mechanic does not know what is he talking about

I am still using my 2004 model Corolla (manual transmission) , has done 91,000 plus kms till now.

Have changed the front dampers once (as its driven on pretty harsh roads), done the tyre change at 48k, & besides that nothing over the top, just the regular servicing & brake pads change.

My brake pads lasted me (the ones that came with the car) about 42 k kms.

Its only now, after more than 4 years of rough driving that its beginning to rattle , but nothing that a replacement of a few rubber beadings won't do away with.

Only problems:

Engine is very boomy at higher revs.

Handling is so- so but ride quality is many times better than my Civic.

But great for city driving as has loads of low end torque, plus is as fuel efficient as my Swift.

Thanks car_crazy, 91,000 Kms is a pretty time to judge a vehicle & it seems the corolla has come out pretty well.

@tsk. was this in India or US ? Asking because you said miles.
