Hyundai I20 Launched at Rs 4.80 lakh

Was going through ACI March issue and came across an article for BMW X3 2.0D (page 91). In that article, the vehicle dimensions section gives the outline image of Hyundai i20 (thought the dimensions with length more than 4500mm, point to that of X3 only).

I just thought maybe they were preparing for the next issue which might feature the i20 diesel and maybe even have a shootout with Fiat Grande Punto MJD.

i20 looks big and great in photos only. In flesh, it looks like just another car. Looks very small also. Not at all a head-turner.

I dosnt look small. But it does look bland, esp from the front 3/4th angle.

IMHO I20 in flesh looked a little weird and out of proportion. BTW I saw the I20 taking a U-turn and may be the angle of view made it to look so. But for sure,the hype in pictures didn't make it to reality.

I have bought an i20 - the asta version. Had booked in the 1st week of Feb itself but apparently they started dispatching the asta versions only after the 15th of Feb, I don't really understand why. Most of the cars, hence are magna versions which we see on the road. Also that magna's might be more in demand.

But finally my car is arriving on the 10th of this month ! will definitely post some pictures and an initial drive report.

Hyundai Motor India (HMI) plans to launch diesel variants of its recently launched compact cars -- i10 and i20 -- to get a larger chunk in the smaller car market, said a senior executive with HMI.

The Indian subsidiary of Hyundai, which has a 25% market share in the 800,000 small car segment in the country, already makes diesel version of these vehicles at its Chennai plant for exports. But in India, Hyundai markets only the petrol variant.

"We will launch the i20 diesel for the domestic market this year. But we are yet to finalise the engine size," a senior company executive said. The company will initially launch the i20 diesel and the smaller i10 car’s diesel variant will be introduced in the domestic market later.

A person who tracks large passenger car makers in the country said, Hyundai may strap the 1.4 litre CRDi diesel engine in the i20 premium hatchback, which is currently being exported to Europe and other overseas markets. The smaller engine will allow Hyundai to take advantage of concessional 8% excise duty levied on smaller cars.

The diesel version of i20 is expected to be priced between Rs 5-6 lakh? , 20-25% more than the petrol version.
The 1.4 litre CRDi engine that offers an 88 BHP of power is expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of around 20 km per litre of fuel.

Hyundai also has a more powerful 1.6 litre diesel version, which is exported, but may not be launched in India due to its high price.

The i20 diesel is expected to come in twin variants. These will be pitted against the hugely popular Maruti’s Swift Diesel, Skoda’s Fabia, Tata Motors’ Indigo, Ford’s Fusion and Fiat’s Palio in the diesel hatchback segment.

Diesel cars are gaining popularity due to their superior fuel efficiency over petrol and lower price of diesel in India. The sales of diesel powered vehicles has doubled to around 30% of the total 1.5 million Indian passenger vehicle market in the past three years.

Very few i20s on road here in Mumbai (South-Western Suburbs). I concur with the views of a lot of fellow BHPians - the car looks good (in white esp) but somehow feels smallish, low and dimunitive - doesn't have the road presence of, say, a Swift with good after market alloys.

No date has been set for when a decision would be taken, but the spokesman said the 1.6 would be launched “within a year” if the green light is given.

Buddy, it does look like a huge mass on road.. wonder if wwe could just place it besides the Swift and see..

+1 to that. Just saw one in white while coming to office. Looks bigger of all the hatches we have and smarter as well. In looks i will rate it above these- Fabia/Swift/Vista/Astar/i10 etc.

For me, in appearance, i20 is neither as cute as i10 nor as aggressive as Swift. Seems like a curvy Swift. Hyundai made all the sharp edges of Swift as curve in i20. Especially look at the rear tail lamp and 'shoulders'.

Only in photos i20 looks good. On road, it's just plain and uninspiring as a Getz.

My personal view.
