Congrats on your decision. I will be visiting Concorde Motors (Mysore Road) this weekend. I will check the Linea out. I too am in the market for a car upgrade now and to me too, ANHC and Linea are the two things in my mind.

My opinion on the recent launches...

ANHC - A "cheaply built" car with excellent engine (based on TD)
Linea and i20 - "Well built" cars with "cheap engines" (based on reports)

Unfortunately, there is nothing like "well built car with good engine" .

Cheap engines? And I thought, MultiJet were the latest and best technology as far as diesels are concerned, which even Fiat competitors are using.

P.S.: Congrats to all those who have booked the car!

However, a word of caution for prospective buyers - Don't book if you are sensitive to pricing. All that everyone knows about Linea prices so far, is mere speculation. If there is an upside on pricing, it will cause unnecessary heartburn and sense of being cheated. So stay away till Jan 14th if you are sensitive to pricing.

By "cheap engines" I mean scaled down ones to meet duty norms, not exactly in terms of build or technology. These engines turn out to be insufficient for the car whereas the powerful engine in ANHC is "too good" to lug around that "tin can".

How I wish Linea or i20 to have come with the iVTEC engine.

I still dont understand the "cheap engine" bit. scaled down in what way? Do you mean the offering of the 1.3 instead of the 1.6JTD?

Scaled down engine:- fitting an inferior powered engine instead of an engine which suits the dimensions and capabilities of the car, mainly due to the price advantage and majority of people are not very "power conscious".

@appuchan and @reignofchaos:

I find it interesting to hear that Linea at 90bhp is underpowered, unless you also consider Skoda Octavia TDi to be underpowered.

Why Octavia, try to accelerate in-gear alongwith 68 bhp Ford Fiesta TDCI or 81 bhp Hyundai Accent CRDi. You'll know how hard your powerful petrol car need to slog to keep up with them. Unless you regularly hit/cruise at 140+ on your highway runs, 90 bhp diesel should be more than sufficient.

For Linea Petrol, I would have loved to have more powerful engine. But, Fiat seems to have learnt its lesson well from past experience. In India, 77bhp iDSI sells far better than 100 bhp Vtec. Now, go figure why? :-)

You may be right, but do they really have a choice there?
If Linea proves to be a success, then they can consider launching more powerful models.

Exactly the point ,that's what Fiat Should do, Offer a car with 1.3MJD to keep the costs down, would you buy a 1.6 or 1.9 engined Linea if the cost was 12 or 13 lakhs , I would recommend every one to Take a test drive of this car before coming to such conclusions , it's not like the car can't do a incline with 5 on board.

I get what you are saying, but ACI here seems pretty sure of what the pricing is going to be:

:: AUTOCAR INDIA - CAR AND BIKE MAGAZINE ::

Killer pricing really. However, I never recommend buying a car without even a TD.

@appuchan

It is difficult to be 100% (or more!) satisfied with just one car isn't it? Our expectations they do grow rapidly with time and as we see stuffs evolving around us. This helps us in improving things and fulfilling more and more expectations. Pepsi chose "Yeh dil maange more" punch line not without good insight of Indian consumer psyche. And "I am loving it!" Linea with the tweaked 1.3 MJD is the best optimisation of every available bits IMHO. Hope the optimisation is expanded to include the customer's wallets too For more discerning customers who likes a bit of this car and a bit of that there is a new business potential - mass commercialisation of customisation (sounds contradictory, eh?) not limited to DC niche. Plonk in ur 1.9L and there you drive away. But please do come with a fatter wallet while walking into the showroom.

@reignofchaos
Vast majority of the car owners in India do not rate engine HP the top 3 yardsticks to chose a car with. Mind you, all of the car owners do not drive their car themselves. Besides, although we seem to have graduated from CC definition of engine "power" to HP, we are yet to move to more correct measurement - torque and its delivery over RPM band. This most correctly defines what engine behaviour and what "rush" or "lag" you expect to experience whilst you drive. Ofcourse, factor in the weight of the car. Simple! For satiating extreme power thirst, one can still find with a bit of luck engines of abandoned jets in erstwhile USSR. Get one of them and shove it in the car

Cheers!

I wouldn't be bothered by the BHP figures quoted. Raw power at the engine means nothing - what matters is power delivery at the wheels: thats where select companies excel.
Also I wouldn't comment on power without driving the car.

When you talk performance, that 77BHP engine can beat some of the higher BHP cars.
